Odd electrical problem solved

Hi,

I'm new to these boards. I've been reading your posts for a few weeks because I was having problems with my 92 Camaro RS. I was getting a 14 code from my ECM on and off. The car suffered from stuttering, occasional black smoke, RPM fluctuations etc. I had already bought a new Hypertech 160 Powerstat and 177-166 fan switch but hadn't installed them yet. So I went and added a new coolant temp sensor (even though an ohm check verified it was good). I installed all three and it seemed to be getting worse. I was about to come here and post my problem when I decided to check some sensor connections. I started the car and the first thing I touched was the coolant sensor. I jiggled the wire harness and the engine began to RPM change wildly. I pulled the connector off and bent the female pins in hoping to get a better connection and I'll be damed if its not running like a champ!! This is my play car not a daily driver so I've been jacking around with this thing for 3 weeks!! The funny thing is I should have checked that because my 93 GMC Sierra had the same problem with the AC compressor harness.

Knowing that the CTS is only a thermistor has anyone ever heard of a mixed signal to the ECM throwing a cars timing a fuel air mixture that far off? The only way I can imagine it is that my computer was disconnected from battery power for several hours before all this started. Could the ECM been having that much trouble syncronizing everything with the rollercoster signal from the CTS?

I just wanted to post this in case anyone else may come across this problem. Love the forums and I'll be hanging around here often.

thanks for the info nicley solved if i might say so, and welcome to the forum. glad to have ya. closest thing to your problem ive done is wire my ICM backwards cuz it dosnt have the plastic connector on it. the car ran for a few seconds until it died spraying a cloud of fuel and air two feet out of my throttle blades. wired it correctly and it ran like a champ.

Hello - Im brand new here. I have a recently purchased 94 camaro. Have already put $1600 in it. It loads up, shakes, loses power. Have taken it to the dealership twice and the computers shows nothing. Just had total tune up and replaced converter and exhaust for same thing. Runs fine for awhile and then BOOM its loading up again. What do I do?? Any more visits to the dealership and Ill be bankrupt!

sounds like u might have some serious issues going on with the engine

Since you had a tune up i suppose you've changed plugs,wires,distributor cap etc. If it were any of your sensors your computer would store a code. Your check engine light comes on when a code is stored. I'm thinking maybe your fuel pump is acting up. I had a Jeep grand cherokee that acted very much like that. But it was intermitent and took several trips to the dealer to nail it down. You might get a better response if you start a new topic. Someone may have other ideas.
