Help removing a 94 starter

This is rediculous but even with 2 manuals, we can't get the 'first' wire removed from the starter. This is the smaller wire with the connector.
The manual states..."disconnect the other wire from terminal 50". My husband and I have been bustin our knuckles using pliers and screwdrivers to try to unhitch this wire connection for 2 hours now, to no avail. The rest of the starter is unbolted but this darn wire just won't come lose.
Does anyone have the answer to release this wire?
Then any kind words to shimmy that thing out the wheel well would also help.
THANKS in advance!

Some have a *press* release meaning you press opposite sides together and slide it off...internally these types and just male to female spade connectors.
You failed to say if yours was a 4 cylinder or V6 and if 2WD or 4X4...or if it has headers....most times I just unbolt it after dropping skid plate if a 4X4 and just slide it out the front...btw if the starter is just clicking at starter, it is most likely just the contact points inside solenoid housing that need replacing and is a 5-10 dollar part and available thru a starter and alternator rebuild shop...goodluck

My husband pried the connectors apart. We had purchased the two copper contacts but needed to remove the starter to fix the finicky start. Nothing would happen ... just like in this post
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=166530&highlight=starter+contacts
so we ordered the contacts. Half of one contact was worn away and it was that unevenness of the two that made the starter sporatic. Also lubed the gear and cleaned the rod contact. Should work another 240,000 miles, don't you think?
You folks here are very generous with your time to help others in need. THANKS so much!

One last thing...it is a 4x4 SR5 6 cyl manual transmission on a 1994 4Runner. Has 240,000+ miles! We're happy with her.

If you are not getting between 13-16 MPG on rebuilt engine driving normally and not heavy on throttle then you got problems with it for sure 4Wheel...let me know bud lol
