1999 Camry fast rattling noise

I have a 1999 Camry with 84000 miles on it (I bought it used 6 months ago). A "fast rattle" sound comes only for a second or so during the acceleration from a complete stop or while accelerating on an uphill.
The sound comes from the right side of the engine.
Apart from this the car runs great and is very smooth. This is a 2.2L, 4 cyl engine with automatic transmission.
Please comment on this as it is becoming an annoyance.
Thanks

Is the rattling you're hearing a metallic sound?

The problem could possibly be caused by some loose heat shields on the exhaust system. Also, there have been some cases where the clip for the prop rod will crack and it will cause the rod to rattle against the unibody during idle.

The noise looks like a "grrr" noise and is more pronounced when the engine is cold or when the temperature is low.
It might be from the heat shields, I will check the bolts on top of it to see what's going on there.
The noise comes when the engine starts to take load. I mean when you put the car in drive and push the gas pedal rather quickly. But, on higher speeds the car is smooth.
I am not aware of the location of "clip for the prop rod". Please let me know and I will check it up also.
Thanks for the help.

I've heard of many cases where the heat shields will come slightly loose and make lots of noise, and only when the engine is cold. When things are cold they contract, and heat causes them to expand, therefore leaving no space to move and make noise. The prop rod, which supports the hood, where the ends clip down onto the unibody of the vehicle. There is usually a plastic retainer clip that is near the driver's side headlamp where the rod clips down to, and there is a small rubber bushing on the other end that is secured into the unibody behind the passenger's side headlamp. Check both of these places as well.

Hello:I have a 1998 Camry Le with the 4 cylinder and 99,000 miles and it does the same thing when cold. The sound goes away after it gets warm.
I checked the heat shield mounting bolts and they all seem to be tight.
Are there any good fixes to this problem?
Sounds like many of these cars do this.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Best Regards...Chuck

There are four pieces that make up the manifold heat shield, you'll need to check all of them before ruling that out. Also, you might want to slide beneath the car, and check the heat shields on the remaining of the exhaust components up front.

Hello:Thanks for the information.I will check it out closer this time.Did not realize that there that many shields to check.
I gather this is a very common problem with these Camry,s?

When it comes to metallic rattling in cars, the most common cause is some kind of heat shield on the exhaust system.

I am not sure what to look for?
Loose bolts or worn out brackets?
Will the fastners be partially backed out or loose enough to turn by hand?
Will I be able to move the shields by hand when cold?
I have never owned a car with loose heat shileds or these strange noises.
I appreciate any information.

COULD BE CAUSED BY A LOT OF THINGS..BUT NOTHING TO WORRY IF YOU SAY YOUR ENGINE IS RUNNING VERY SMOOTH...

Check for loose bolts on all of the shields. They may or may not be loose enough to turn by hand, but you should notice some play in the shields when the engine is completely cold.
