98 golf won't start

I have a 98 Golf K2 edition, 5 sp Manual with under 100,000 km on it. I have trouble starting the car on a daily basis, worse when it's raining or humid. It turns over and sometimes chugs for a few seconds but won't "catch". I can get it started after 5 or 6 tries if I pump the gas and it's easier to start if I park on a level surface. Strangely it only gives me trouble when I start it in the morning, any other time it fires up first try no problem. I replaced the distributor cap, wires and plugs about 1 1/2 years ago and have had daily starting issues for about one month.
Any ideas? I'm taking it to a garage on Tuesday and would like to have an idea of what I'm dealing with.

Do a search on ignition coil, 90% of the failing units cause problems in the rain.
