1998 Transport Thermostat

Is changing the thermostat in my 1998 Pontiac Transport as difficult as it looks. Whatever happened to the two bolts on the top of the block. My temperature guage only goes to about 1/4 whether I'm driving in the city or on the highway so I thought I would change the thermostat and see if I can get a little more heat out of the vehicle.
