how much HP could one expect to gain by putting a 6al into their vehicle ?

Virtually None.. I put a MSD 6AL box on my Nova and noticed almost no gains at all. Maybe SLIGHTLY better gas mileage and the car idled a little better, but that was it. The Accel super coil I put on my car gave a much more noticeable gain then the MSD box did, and at 200 bucks, I can think of better mods.

I picked up a 6AL brand new for 139.00.

Performance Benefits:
Improves power, quickens throttle response.
Smooths out idle and starting.
Reduces spark plug fouling.
Improves mileage and reduces emissions.

so is said. I think it will make a nice edition. Also , once I convert to the HEI system ..it should make a noticable difference.

You asked, and I told you from personal experience. If you obviously have all the answers, don't ask the questions in the first place... WHen I bought mine from Summitracing.com two years ago it was 199 plus 13 for shipping.

Exactly where did you pick it up for that much and its brand new?

Ebay XD , I wasn't trying to be an ass dude , I had the question about HP for just the 6AL , not for my refference , for some one else who just wants to bolt the 6al on and not do anymore electricity mods.
No need to get heated man.

I found the 6al on ebay for 139.00 with the buy it now option. I jumped on that in a flash.

I apologize. I just took the comment the wrong way. That is also a very good deal on the box, nice job on scooping it up.

It's cool , I don't think I exactly worded it right the first time..lol. But yeah , according to msd , if you go through your whole ignition system with msd crap , you can get anywhere from 15 hp , to 40. so they say , I doubt it though as electricty isn't much for horse power. I am running under the assumption I will at least get 1 hp for a 6aL and a hei conversion with a optima heavy duty battery. If I can get at least that much , cool. I see msd more as a effeciency thing rather than a racing thing and if it offers me a more pleasant driving experience or more power , I'd be totally stoked with either one. A smoother idle does sound really nice.I hate having my shit shake at 700 rpm idle.car is like bouncing from side to side..apparently , it's perfectly timed too..wtf ? We'll see how this MSD box and HEI conversion goes..if nothing else , I can have more nifty stuff under my hood that is better than stock at least =D

In my opinion, the best thing about the MSD box is the improved gas mileage. The box eventually pays for itself. I found myself getting about 15 more miles per tank after I put the box on (13 gallon tank), but when your gas mileage is around 8MPG, its like saving 5 bucks per tank of gas. It also improves cold starts dramatically which helps out tremendously for a carbed motor, but I doubt you will notice that much on a fuel injected motor. Anyway, good luck with it all.

well, electricity can improve performance, considering it's what enables combustion in a vehicle, but i would still only expect great improvements in a dragster.

has anyone seen one of those MSD displays in race shops and stuff that they have set up with the spark plug and it makes a little arc with a regular ignition and then one with the same plug and a MSD box and the msd arc is like glowing red and thick and looks like a lightning bolt and the other one is barely flickering. i dont know could be b.s., i dont have one myself but that display intrigued me.

It's how it really works. But they have that set up for constant elec. flow. If it was just msd set up then it would be just as strong but in flickers. but basically yeah , thats about how it works. If you figure a stock set up sends anywhere from what..10 - 15Kv to the plugs as where MSD set ups can send 45 - 60Kv to the pugs.

I just bought a msd 6al and a msd pt#8226 HEI coil direct replacement, I have a 1994 LT1 Z28.
Do i have to change my plugs and opti or can i leave the OEM ones in there?

You can leave the stock stuff and just use the replacement coil.

Also this thread is a year old.
