One more question

Thanks for the advice already. I have another question, though. I did a compression test today and got between 125 and 135 psi. I dumped some oil into the number one cyclander and got it up to about 160. Are these bad readings, or are they okay. My truck doesn't burn or use hardly any oil. I don't ever have to add any between changes. But I still lack power. So I guess my question is, is the lack of power from a worn out motor, or is it from something else.

PS I had my exhaust system checked out. My cat and muffler are both good, and the exhaust is moving a good amount of air. The guy did say that he could hear a little bit of a rattle in the muffler and said I should look into getting it replaced within the next few months. He suggested a free flowing exhaust. Should I go with that, or stick with a normal muffler.

it turns out that my aux injection diaphram on the carb was messed up. I put a new one in and the truck runs a lot better. The mechanic that clued me in said that it was a fairly common problem. I will have to take a long drive to see if my gas mileage goes up.

Did you put oil in all the cylinders when you did the compression test. Number one cylinder has worn rings and good valves. If after fixing the carburetor the truck runs fine, I would worry about the low compression readings for a while. Check the compression every time you do an oil change and document any changes. If you need to replace the motor, check out the free classified adds available at most auto parts stores. Many engine and transmission importers advertise in them. In the S.F. Bay area, a replacement motor can be purchased for less than $500- and it comes with a warranty. Because of the age of your pick-up, you might have trouble locating a good used motor but not necessarily impossible. Celicas used the same motor with a different cam and oil pan.
