I also own a 96 Jeep GC 5.2 LMT 4x4 with the very same problem coming up on my "VIC" (vehicle information center) as you have on yours, that is the message "Service 4WD Switch." Kind of a pain in the ass wouldn't you say. The switch it wants you to service is simply the replacement of one of a possible two different part numbers: 56006755 $33.45 or 83503525 $37.85 based on the type of transverse case you have. The part just screws into the TF case when you pull out the old one and switch the wiring just below the driver's seat by back drive shaft. I changed mine out the 755 one only to have the problem come up again. I think it is something to do with the chip or computer and can't afford to replace that so I am just going to disconnect the warning to the buzzer under the bottom of the steering column, I know it defeats other warning but I am tired of hearing the one about the 4WD Switch.

Just disconnect the wire from the switch on the transfer case. Done! It only tells you weather you are in lo or hi. Serves no other purpose. No harm to anything. Mines disconected for a year now...No problems.
