General Stang Question...

Or any car, for that matter.

Would an auto transmission beat a decent stick driver on a straightaway? I've heard people argue that there's no way to outshift an auto tranny on a straightaway, and I've heard others say that sticks are faster as long as the driver doesn't miss a gear and is halfway decent.

Which is correct?

sticks are always better if ur a decent driver, the reason is because you get more hp to the wheels with a stick, an auto will not beat a decent stick driver anywhere anyhow, sometimes with an auto u can lose around 50 hp going from the engine to the wheels

MOST of the time guys who switch to auto are guys who are afraid to learn to drive a stick. Easier to launch and somewhat quicker shifts...

Get an aftermarket shifter and learn to powershift, you can shift faster than a stock AOD...

However, an auto car is more consistent at the track so running in a class with a dial-in you can win with an auto unless your up against a real hotshoe...

Nothing beats and auto in an all out drag car. If an auto is built right it will hang with a manual of equal mods no problem.

a stick isnt better then an auto..only if your keeping things fairly stock ..anyone with real power would break a stock 5 speed in seconds...if your looking for max power from a stock(ish)motor..then go with a 5 speed..but if your going to build up your motor..invest in a good c4 or c6..even a stock c6 can handle 400hp easy ps stay away from the AOD..they dont call it the (DOA) for nothin

out of the box an auto is slower, if you can drive the stick well. You would def. want an auto for drag racing, but you would want a stick for autox.

I dunno about the AOD's being junk. I had a well built AOD with stall converter in my old GT. I beat the ever living piss out of it and it still shifted hard and held up very well to my 300-350hp I was running.

The both have pro's and con's...

Stick will always make more hp to the wheels with equal flywheel hp. So in heads-up, or head-up class racing you can always have the advantage of HP if your motor combo's are equal.

Auto's also have an advantage. the main one is being more consistent at every thing from shift to the launch.

So on a straightaway top-speed run (if that was ya question cause u didn't say 1/4 mile) two stock cars the same, one auto one manual. The manual will win if driven right cause it has the HP advantage to get it out of the whole and the hp advantage to fight wind resistance.

I agree. But you know as well as I do that auto's should not be under estimated.

Now speaking of cars with the same set up, but different trannys. My GT ran 13.6 at the track, but Notch with same motor pulled for the GT and same exact set up ran 13.4 my first run ever. That was with the same 60'ft times too of 2.1 sec both cars.

The Nice thing about Manual is how you can control what you want the car to do much easier than an Auto tranny.

Besides, I fear the Ford AOD from the horror stories I've heard. I don't have to worry too much about my T5 as I don't powershift with it :) (Yeah I know I suck :( )

well the aod is good for one thing, easy daily driving. it works for my stang. but i wouldnt romp it. it would cost twice as much to build up then a c4/c6 and for the stick shift?? well i just got sick of rowing every freakin gear, every freakin day. sure it makes you feel cool, and it a cool novilty to show the girl in the passenger seat. but it just gets old (sometimes) becides how will you wave good buy to the honda behind you?
