The engine light on my BMW will come on and stay on for days. I have called and taken it in several times to the dealer and am told the same thing each time. It's just the atmosphere reacting to the emmision controls and it's nothing to worry about. Does anyone have a better reason for this annoying problem? :frown:

possibly a bad sensor, but that should have shown up when they tested it. thats my only guess with no knowledge of the 2000 model

I have had a similar problem. Have had it checked and found it to be faulty oxygen sensor. There are 4 sensors on either exhaust downpipe, one in front and one at the back. They should be changed in pairs. The intermittent nature of the light is due to the fact that one of the sensors fails or is suffering degraded efficiency, extra pressure is put onto the corresponding sensor as it tries to compensate for the loss of performance in the faulty sensor.

your dealer, simply put is retarded. Find another.
It could be anything at all, from a loose gas cap to cats. Anything which has to do with emissions. You need the codes read and parts replaced. Unless you are sending this from another planet with a different atmosphere, find someone else.
