The Service Engine Light - (which is not the Check Engine Light) is a true idiot light that Chrysler put on these vehicles. I found out the following info from my mechanic inlaws which I will share.
Chrysler wanted to have its emission systems checked out as the car aged. The light comes on based on mileage (and mileage only) somewhere between 75K-85K miles. Nothings wrong, but when drivers see this idiot light, they panic, and drop the off at the shop to be fixed. If the shop is legit, it would just check that all the sensors are operating within spec. Then they reset the light. Still, I don't like having to pay a mechanic when there's nothing wrong.
On early caravans, the reset switch is located in the worst place to get at - under driver's dash behind instrument panel - somewhere at an arm's reach. I wouldn't even know what the switch would look like (toggle or button). I understand this switch was moved to someplace more convient on later models.
I would recremend the poor man's solution which I employed. Remove the intrument panel cover and remove the bulb. On my 88 Caravan, it was behind a woodgrain trim panel. Alternately, you could use a sewing needle and hammer and punch a small hole thru the cover plate to destroy the bulb.
