i have a 98 2 wheel drive s-10 with stock tires and it looks terrible with those little tires. i want bigger tires but i dont want them to be rediculously big, something like whats stock on 4x4 blazers and jimmys. what size tires do you think i should get?

my Blazer 4x4 has 235-75-15, although they might not fit on your truck. Your probably safe running 205-75-15 tires.

If you ask an auto-wreck nicely they might let you try a set of bigger tires, on wheels on your truck. Then you know if they will fit.

Besides I've seen basicly new tires, on nice wheels at auto-wrecks for really good prices from time to time.

You didn't say if you have 14" or 15" rims. My 91 s-10 has 235/15/75 tires. These same tires fit my 02 s-10
Just a note, the inside spare tire storage area is a bit small for this tire on the 91. When I removed the outside swing arm spare tire carrier and decided to store the tire inside I had to shave some of the plastic moulding on the tailgate to get it to close

i have Goodyear Eagle GTII, 235/60/15, on my 95 S-10 and i like them alot. fills the wheel well up nicely without being too big. traction is tons better than the stock tires had also.

I have a '95 pickup 4x4 and have BGF all-terain's 235x75xR15. These are great tires for someone that goes off road in a 4x4 but for your application I would go with something different. Try the BFG long trail's 235x70xR15, a friend of mine has this tire on his Tahoe and loves them (his are larger for the bigger truck). I have always found BFG to be a little more pricey but for truck tires they work great.

205/75/15

Those are pretty big tires as they are.

Going to a bigger tire will mean you will have to get your speedo and odometer calibrated and expect a drop in fuel economy.

If you are looking for tires for offroading disregaurd this but if you are looking for performance and looks, I put a set of 245/50/16 Potenza's on my 01' extreme and they look and perform very nice

they arent that big of tires, they are passenger car tires and they are so thin its rediculous

A good beefy P235/75r15 will do you well.

Side wall is about 1 inch thicker but remember, get your speedo calibrated after the swap.

how do i get my speedo calibrated...is it expensive?>

They call it flashing the ecm. It's done electronically with a scan tool.

its about 300 bucks, because you buy a hypertech power programmer III then, after your done tuning your speedo, you can add some power

cobra1
01-09-2005, 05:59 AM
your 205/75/15's have a circumference of 27.1".

235/60/15's have a cir. of 26.1", slightly smaller, but wider, and will cause your speedo to read faster than your going.

235/75/15's have a cir of 28.87", a bigger diff in cir, and will cause your speedo to read slower.

If you don't want to buy a hypertech, then have the computer programmed at the dealer or a shop with the right tool.

Also, on a 4x4, you will need to have all 4 tires the same. If not you will rip out and destroy your drivetrain when in 4x4. They have to be the same.

yeah im getting them all the same, its a 2 wheel drive anyways....but is it cheap to have the dealer program the computer for the new tires...btw thanks for all the help

and also...with 235/75/15 tires...how much would it effect my fuel consumption?

BlazerLT

Maybe 1-2 mpg less difference max.

The bigger tires have more width also.

More width, more contact with road, more resistance.

forgive me as i may have this backwards, but isnt bigger tires the same effect as a higher gear, and the end result being lower rpm's? thus any increased resistance from a wider contact patch canceled out?

or is it the other way around?

BlazerLT

I am taking about the physical resistance between the road and the tire. More energy is needed to turn the tire in essence.

greendayhbt26

that more energy needed to turn the tire....will that give me a noticable decrease in power, because i only have a 2.2L

cobra1
01-10-2005, 12:30 AM
i fully understand that, from the 205 to the 235 of course is 30mm or about 1 1/8", but if the larger tire circumference has the same effect as a higher gear, than the decrease in rpm's should/will cancel out any decrease in mpg that may be caused by the wider tire.

BlazerLT

ok, so if you put on huge mudding tires that are wider and taller, the fuel economy will be the same?

Not by my calculations. There is more drag which requires more power. Not a huge difference, but it is there.

Best be sticking with what you have.

You engine is lacking in power as it is.

no, were talking about small differences canceling each other. a hundred or so less rpm's at normal speed will certainly make up for an inch wider tire.

i saw no or very little difference in gas mileage from 205/75/15's to the 235/60/15's that i have on there now. not only that the 235's have a smaller circumference, which would have the effect of a slightly lower gear. even with my lead footed driving, i still average 20 mpg with a city/highway mix.

but with that 2.2L he's got, its all for not anyway, that 205 is plenty traction enough for that.

True, big tires on a 4 banger is not smart at all.

i dont want huge just something a little larger, my truck looks like its lacking something and its tire size...would a 225/75/15 be a better choice?

BlazerLT

Your truck is lacking in the power department, not the tire department.

Stop blowing your truck up to be something it is not.

I have 235/75/15 on my 2000 2.2l 5 speed. It doesnt really mess up the gas mileage at all. They do rub a little when it is turned all the way but its nothing horrible. I wouldnt get the bfg long trails. It doesnt have any traction. Its more like an all season tire. Make sure you get an all-terrain. It definatly looks alot better with the bigger tire. Not everyone can afford 4x4, besides doin it in 2wd is funner:)

if your dead set on changing tire sizes in order to change appearance, then go with a 235/60/15. the overall circumference is about an inch smaller than your current tires, but the increased width still makes them look better than the 205's you have now.

and the smaller circumference tire wont rob you of any power that you dont wanna lose.

It won't rob any power, but it'll drain your fuel tank faster, and with todays outragous fuel prices who needs that

if your worried about gas milage/power, just think, the factory may do some dumb shit, but, the tire sizes are that for a reason, if your after looks and power/ miles per gallon dont matter, then go a tad wider and bigger
