Hello everyone,
I am new here My name is Bill. I am a Mechanic by force not by choice. (Read I am poor).

Anyway, My Jimmy is doing somthing that none of my mech. Friends can figure out for sure. It started about two or three days ago.

When you first start the engine and its cold it makes a hell-of-a-Racket...Sounds almost like something is stuck in the belt or drive line or something. And its is REALLY loud! People can hear it on my cell phone with the windows up! The noise increases speed with RPM.

After a few min. it completly disappers... Until I put it in gear Any forward gear brings the noise back. If I take it out of gear into "N" it stops and then starts again but is MUCH softer. It will sometimes do it in reverse but mostly its in the forward gears.

OK Now when I am driving it will make this ungodly noise that increases with the speed of the engine--NOT my actual speed until I get to thrid gear or about 35 MPH. Then POOF its gone and will not return until I come to a stop or slow way down.

I should mention also that the engine is running great...starts right up. When the engine shifts its smooth and firm.

My friends "think" it might be my Torque Converter? I don't know cause it sounds real loud! does not sound like its "inside" of anything..

At this point I am read to take any suggestions. Its my only car I have to drive it. So I am just keeping my fingers crossed it something easy and cheap...

Thanks a bunch in advance.

Bill

Hello everyone,

First of Thanks LTBlazer for even reading my post. I do appreciate it.

But we figured it out. Like I said I am NO mechanic. But I like to pretend that I am on weekends....I had one more friend to try I was suppose to meet him at his parents house(it was about a half way point). He is a certified GM mechanic for one of the dealers here in town. So I figured if he could'nt figure it out I was totally screwed. He was late and his DAD showed up from work. I talked with him and he said "well hell if we wait for matt we will be here all night! lets pull it in the garage!"

So I started my Jimmy and he said "My God you drove that here!" Thats how ugly and loud the knocking was. He got underneath it cause my friend never showed up! (Bastard) Anyway, come to find out he is some kinda specialized Mr. Wizard mechanic and fixes things like dumptrucks and front loaders. He took some cover off so he could look at the the drive plate (He though it might be craked and I think that is what he called it) I started to turn the engine with a socket on the cranshaft I did not turn it more then about an inch and he yelled "Whoa! I found the problem!"

I guess at some point in the life of my Jimmy someone had taken the tranny out before....Seems then did not quit tighten all the bolts on the Bell housing down. There were only three left. one was so loose he pulled it out with is hand! and there was about a 1/4 inch gap between the engine and the tranny.

We tightened the three bolts that were left down and snugged up the Tranny to the engine. NOISE IS GONE! Temp is back to normal.

So Now tommorow all I got to do is take one of these bolts out. Go down and match it up (Threads, lenght, grade) and install them.

I am SOOOOOO happy I don't have a big expensive repair! Last thing I needed right now.

Thanks to all I will lurk around and see if I can help when I can. I have had the car about a year and fixed a few things. Maybe I can help someone.

Thanks again all!
