Automatic Racing

Hey, i was wondering if any of you guys have tips for racing an automatic transmision car, other than holding the brake and revving till it starts moving a lil, what other tips are there to get going faster with an automatic?

crunchymilk55

floor it??

Robs71Nova

Basically if your racing from a stop, leave the car drive, stall is up slightly, and floor it when the race begins. Alot of people like dropping it in 1st when racing an automatic, but it gives no advantage at all, and usually hurts the person in the end because they don't know the correct shift points. If your racing from a roll, it's ok to downshift and save yourself the time of the car shifting into passing gear when stomping the gas. Besides that there really aren't and automatic driving tips.

what ever u do DO NOT NEUTRAL DRoP It ! power brake is the best thing u can do, then i heard something about takin off overdrive in 2nd gear but i have no idea abotu it cuz i never done it.

ok i got a story its not worth starting a new thread and its real quick,, my friend got a GTO the other day.. he just raced aganist the evo
the GTO is auto and the goof ball had it in neutral and thought it was in drive.... they both punched it and he revved it up and was like wtf and
sean the boy in the evo took off and finally the boy in the gto (doesnt kno how to race ) neutral droppped it at 5 grand... and spun the tires forever then they caught and he went for 3 secs and stopped.. they lined back up and cops were comin do they fled.. lol

Tell your friend that i think hes an idiot for buying an automatic GTO....The Manual equipped GTO cant even go to 60 in under 5 secodns and the Automatic version hits 60 in 5.7s while the manual can hit 60 in 5.2-5.4 depending on the driver....You should of seen what me and my homies did when we saw a brand new C6 Corvette that had an automatic....2 words...... shaving cream

i told the boy he was stupid for gettin an auto... but he told me that they only had 10 GTO's and 9 were auto and the other was stick but it was yellow, this was the place he could get a really good deal on one, its leased and he only pays 350 a month.. btw it is phantom black.

Rob

thats not true at all.

not only can i feel the difference when i drop my dads c5 vette in 1st but i've went to the track in my friends 95 camry and took off normal, with just holding the brake and raising the rpms. then i put in if first and got a .2 difference in the run.

also, in drive in my dads vette if you just hit the gas and floor it, it starts off wrather slow, drop it in first and take off from a dig and it leaves like a bat out a hell.

the shifting is wrather easy.

01-06-2005, 05:58 PM
I always liked my old 400 turbo cause it would shift for you if you were to lazy to shift but it was out of the power band when it did shift, and the neutral dropping well I saw a Contor try that at the track a few years ago and I heard a POP, right away I said to a friend "well there went a cv" sure enough he snapped something cause he had to be pushed off the line and I doubt he drove it home.

So you and your 'homies' vandalized some guys brand new, nice car? Definitely not because it has an automatic transmission, but because you're jealous that you drive a piece of shit automatic V6 mustang that gets beat by scions. You know what I'd do to you and your homies if that was my car? Guess. and I'll give you a hint..it's more than two words. If you guessed "Beat all your fucking faces in with a baseball bat", you guessed correctly. God damn that pisses me off...just because you have a $5,000 car doesn't mean you can go around fucking up other peoples cars. I hope you lose control of your little shit banger and crash into a light post.

Not liking someone else's choice of car is fine, Not liking their shoice of car because of the transmission is also alright (dumb... but alright) But vandalising someone's property because of it? That's fucking dumb. What are you 13? You seem to act like it. Sheesh. Grow up.

Personally, a Corvette with an automatic isn't a Corvette, just some car with a fiberglass body. I wouldn't go up and mess up the car for that though. That is just stupid, childish, and even worse, rice-ish.

Anyway, I found that you don't stomp on the gas while racing with an automatic. This is the last thing you want to do. Instead quickly walk into your gas just enough to where the car gets a good roll and doesn't break loose. You'll probably have to do it a few times to find the right spot. When you feel the car has a good grab on the pavement stomp it the rest of the way and your car will shoot off.

It's the most rediculous thing i've ever heard on what that moron did. IF i ever saw anyone doing that, i'd run them over. A car's a car, and it has done nothing to you. You needa grow up and stop messing with something beyond your comprehension. Car enthusiast my ass....

Two techniques to launching an auto.

1. Brake stall - Hold the brake and bring up the engine revs to about 400-200RPM under the rated stall of the stall convertor. Ease into the throttle as quickly as possible without causing the tires to break traction. This technique gets the engine reving closer to its peak torque and therefore increases launch acceleration. Example: the 4L60E in my car has a 1600RPM stall convertor, I brake stall to 1200RPM, then ease into the throttle on the green light as quickly as possible without breaking traction. Idle in my car is at 500RPM by stalling up to 1200RPM the engine needs to wind out 700RPM less to get to its peak torque value at 4400RPM.

2. Flash stall - Mash the gas on the green. The principle here is to get the engine revs to their peak torque value as soon as possible to get peak acceleration. At WOT the engine quickly climb in revs and transmits increasing torque to the stall convertor. The stall convertor can't react instantaneously to the changing torque and delays power transfer until its "flash" rating is reached. Example: If I mash the gas in my car, the stall convertor will suddenly start transmitting torque to the wheels at a 1600RPM+ levels. This is ~400RPM closer to peak than technique 1 but the sudden jolt and mad RPM dash to peak torque also makes it much easier to lose traction resulting in slower 60'.

Use technique 1 if your car is traction limited.
Use technique 2 if you got a kickass tire/suspension setup that hooks well. With a high enough TC it's as good as a clutch drop.

Danno pretty much hit the nail on the head, that's exactly how I drive my truck. On the street I have to roll into the throttle, otherwise it just roasts the tires. But at the track with slicks & drag shocks set properly, I can take full advantage of my 2800 stall. I keep my foot on the gas, usually around 800-1000rpm so I can cut a good light, then floor it and let the stall flash up. It's been good for low-mid 1.7 60' times. Hoping to drop that some more this season with a higher stall (probably 32-3500), new slicks and some more suspension tweaks, 1.6's and I'll be happy :grinyes:

Can't get over how many guys light up their times in a street race - you lose so much by doing that. I mean there's times where you agree to just "floor it" with the other guy to put on a show and see whose car will hookup first, but otherwise...

I don't know what I'd do if I caught somebody or some people vandalizing a car (let alone a new C6! Haven't even seen one on the road yet - think I'd lynch the punk doing that!!). The final satisfaction would be taking pics of this person and if possible identifying the person through plates #'s, although somebody stupid enough to do this crap would probably be just a bunch of dumb-ass kids on foot (or in this case a V6-Putzstang loser). Nevertheless, getting this persons pictures over to the owner of the car so they can find them and I'd ask nothing more than to simply be invited to the confrontation when they corner the little bastard and beat the shit out of them... that would feel so good to watch.

burntrice087...if you really did that, which I dont doubt you did since you seem really proud of yourself for it, you are a dirty cockgobbler as is your pos V6 rustang that doesnt even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence of a C6 corvette...auto or not. People have preferences, and those are personal and should be respected. See I kinda respected you when you admitted that you were lying so much before, but now, I have lost all respect for you, and I really dont think you are even worthy of driving a car. You sir, are an asshole.

You know what, openly admitting to vandalizing somebodies car pisses me off.

And it was an old ladies car you said, she can afford a Corvette. That's awesome, but she may not be physically able to push in the clutch of a T-56 manual transmission. So she has an automatic, big deal, they're just as fast.

Take your own damn advise and wise up you little shit, don't hate the players hate the game.

And the player, was an old lady who had a badass car you'll never have. The game, even in automatic form it's still faster than you.

Get over it.

Nice advice! I've been using technique 1 since I put the TCI 3000 infront of my 4l60e. My little stock g80 posi can't hold from a brake stall over 1000rpms, and I'm still getting a little tire spin feathering it out of the hole on these BF Drag radials. Thank God I just got my Eaton in this week. LET THE LAUNCHING BEGIN!!!!!

when you are sitting in place you hold the brakes so your car doesnt move (yes you are in gear) it doesnt do anything to your brakes.

a stall converter is a part you buy for your auto tranny that doesnt transfer torque through your tranny until it hits a certain rpm ie2500

when you hit that rpm level it lets all the power through to your wheels and you take off.

doing the break stall thing is a free "stall converter" its not as effective but it gets you similar results.
