98 Auto Trans shifting problem

98 Malibu L3 with 3.1 L and auto trans. 68Kmiles
Auto trans revs up too high before shifting from 1st into 2nd gear. May be skipping 2nd and jumping past into third? I can manually run through the gears (1,2,3,D) and the shifts feel pretty good. Dealer says "something in the valve body must be sticking" and wants $1100.
Intake manifold gasket leaking coolant too.
