charging problem

from what I get out of this charging system is the one wire at the alt is hot with key dead with key the other wire(tan with black stripe)goes to volt gauge.this wire has to have some resistants right?if the gauge is bad will the alt charge?when I make the tan&black wire hot from battery the alt starts charging.what is the prblem?thanks in advance wayne its a 90 laredo.

Are you saying you have a volt meter gauge?? or is there an alternator light that is on when the engine is running and it is not charging??

In either case, check the fuse for the gauges. Not sure which number it is....
