Hey everyone,

Just in case anyone is into third gens, and is interested. The history channel tonight at 9:00PM is doing a show on the 88 IROC. Its kinda a cross between a history show, and overhaulin. two teams are givin similar 88 IROCs, and have two days to build them up and race in a quarter mile drag race. the winner gets to keep both cars. and if i understand correctly they are also doing a story about the history of the IROC, should be interesting. just thought id let yall know about it.

yeah last time they had a el camino race a ranchero and even though the ford had more hp and torque the camino was taking it everytime you have gotta love chevy

The Chevy and the Ford in the episode you were speaking of were not properly matched. The Ford was a shitty peg leg and the chevy was a posi that most likely had better gearing. I am a Chevy guy too, of course, but when one has that much of an advantage over the other it's not much of a win if you ask me.

tacoma man.
01-05-2005, 06:47 PM
yeah but the bottom line is chevy still kicked its ass

01-05-2005, 07:23 PM

yeah im watching now too, commercial now, they race when it comes back on. I gotta say, from personal experience, i would have gone with the shift kit after feeling the difference it made in my IROC. i didnt feel shit from the catback system, just sounded a helluva lot better. now if they had put on headers i would have agreed with the exhaust systems.

13.29 WOW. Never thought I would see a 3rd gen go that fast.

Savage Messiah
01-05-2005, 10:01 PM
yep, i bet they wish theyd gone with the shift kit too [and left it in D]

89IROC&RS
01-05-2005, 10:02 PM
well, that solidifies the rumor i heard about drag racing a 700R4. Note the old guys shifted by hand, and the younger guys left it in drive, and the young guys ran a half second faster. in nearly identical IROC's. when my baby is up and running, it will be interesting to see for myself which is faster.

89IROC&RS
01-05-2005, 10:03 PM
what makes you think a third gen wont go 13.29???? im almost hurt ;)

01-05-2005, 10:07 PM
i missed it guys, what kind of mods did they put on the irocs to make them run 13's?

89IROC&RS
01-05-2005, 10:18 PM
pretty simple really, threw a vortec supercharger on it, 3in catback exhaust system, and MSD ignition system. stock setup they ran 207hp at the rear wheels, after the mods they ran 322hp at the rear wheels. so, three and a quarter hp will make a slushbox third gen run low to flat 13's.

although to be fair there is alot they didnt say about the cars. If they had 10 bolt or 9 bolt rear ends, if they were posi or open, what gear ratio they were running, what boost the superchargers were pushing ect. ect.

89IROC&RS
01-05-2005, 10:20 PM
oh and something else i thought about, the white camaro that ran the faster times, was a solid roof coupe, and the red one that was a half second slower was the T-top version. methinks they should have bought some subframe connectors :)

Genopsyde
01-05-2005, 10:33 PM
neither team knew how to launch, and their reaction times were crap.

Genopsyde
01-05-2005, 10:34 PM
and that B&M shift kit they had is crap too.

Ya know as soon as they said that I was thinking the T-top car should get subframe connectors. But didn't the T-top car come out of the hole better everytime?

89IROC&RS
01-05-2005, 10:54 PM
dunno, didnt see reaction times. although they had to have been babying them off the line cuz they were lighting em up pretty easy for the burnouts, and never had a problem with wheel spin on the launch. so i think the young guys were scared of the low end torque seeing as they were import guys, and the older guys were probly over babying them because they are new to superchargers. so it was a learning curve for both groups. and as we all know, when youre learning something new at the track your reaction time suffers.

89IROC&RS
01-05-2005, 10:56 PM
but geno, why do you say the B&M kit is crap??? ive got it in my 700R4 and there was a DEFINATE seat of pants feel after it was installed. Any 700R4's i run in the future will always get the B&M trans kit in them.

01-05-2005, 11:03 PM
for everyone who missed it, it is running again at 1:00 AM, so in like two hours. just so all the people who were at work might have a chance to see it.

Sounds awsome, I also have one question, what benefit do the sub frame connectors do. One of my friends wants to put them on his 98 LS1 TA, so i was wondering...

Genopsyde
01-05-2005, 11:19 PM
they keep that weak uni-body chassis from twisting from added HP. I guess it allows improved power transfer as well.

They help prevent the wasting of force created by the engine from going into the uni-body, also know as flexing.

to better understand why subframe connectors work, you have to kinda understand the camaro frame design. From the getgo the camaro has always had one key weakness, its frame. The drivetrain and suspension were always strong and effective. But the unibody frame design was not up to the task of handleing the power.

Basicly if you look at a camaro in profile, the body has a frame that extends from the rear bumper up to the windsheild, at this point the rest of the frame, from the front bumper back to the firewall, is bolted to the rest of the car. this was a cheaper more modular method of construction that saved GM money, but was very weak and subject to torsional (rotational) forces. In effect it is a car with two seperate frames, that are loosley connected at a midpoint.

what subframe connectors do is ridgidly connect these two frames together making the whole car more solid, they improove handling, power transfer, and overal ride quality.

i figured the import guys would have wrecked trying to launch. my neighbor that lives below me has a 87 iroc-z, its red just like the one on the show and she is trying to sell it, its a 305 tpi, with a automatic, she only wants 1500 for it and she's been trying to get rid of it for 2 years now. i have seen it out on the road and it seems perfect. im thinking of getting it to just put up.

Hey guys, who knew that muscle cars were fast, as well as imports? I thought that was a particularly dumb comment...(By the young guy at the end of the show) :shakehead

yeah, i thought to myself show me a import that can roast its tires like those irocs

89IROC&RS
01-06-2005, 08:14 PM
lol, i thought it was pretty ass'ish of them to even throw out that they "decided they might keep them" fuck, if i ran the show id snatch the keys back and be like fuck you two, we just gave you free cars that are badass, and you were planning on sellin em the whole time. fuck off. lol. but then again, we should see the light here, they were import guys, who have converted over to american muscle, to me, this is a good thing. :)

Unless they slap a triple decker aluminum wing on it...maybe some Streetglow and an "R" sticker for good measure. :shakehead

I watched the show. Was glad to see the cars do so well. 13.2s aren't bad, but, that said, with 320ish rwhp, they should have been a little faster I think. My 99Z only has 280ish rwhp, and I run mid 13's all day long. Maybe with a little more runs, they could have improved some more. I know it took me about 10 runs with the Z to get it as fast as it'll go and consistent. I'd have to give this show two thumbs up overall for possibly converting two "import" guys to domestics.
