Would you recommend buying a 3kGT?

Hey guys i currently have a 1996 Eclipse GS, but its just not hackin it for the horsepower..would you recommend me getting a 3000 GT VR4? i heard they have a lot of problems after the 60k miles, and im lookin at this one on autotrader.com and im wondering what u guys would say?

First of all that was a dumb question to ask us, of course you should, a vr4 is a god on the street, good luck with it keep us posted.

Yes, VR4's have lots of problems when they are abused. If you take care of the car, she'll take car of you.

They are lots of fun to drive. There isn't a time, when I go driving, that I don't get a compliment.

Any car, with money, can be a "god" on the street.

EDIT: Go with a 94+ VR4. I see less problems with those then 91-93's.

I say dont get a vr4 unless you look to pay about 5 thousand dollars in maintenance within the first year you buy it. Something WILL prolly happen to the car, the clutch will, the engine, and hell with all the miles the turbos will go , then you are screwed out of LOTS of money. I say go with a 94+ SL , Hell i have an automatic SL and that son of bitch still flys. Trust me, the SL is very quick , not just vr4s.

^ I agree, but if u really like the 1st gen look, get a 93' they've got an engine with more potential (read about it in the FAQ if you like), can't go wrong with the 1st car's paint job, but at any rate, I mean the only way to tell for sure is to go and check out the car yourself, make sure the guy isn't gonna screw u. Also check out www.KBB.com to know the exact kelly blue book value for the car...

dont listen to the last 2 posters. I own a 92 VR4 and nothing has gone wrong with it until recently, and that was my fault anyways....

the car is in tip top shape and runs great. if you treat it nice it will be just fine.

and theoretically if the turbos did blow you can buy replacement turbos for like $200 at the most for 9b's.

i just looked at both of those cars, and neither of them are worth the money. a 91 vr4 is probably worth about 7k. that guy is asking 10,900. even with mods, it doesn't increase the value of the vehicle. the second guy is asking WAY too much for a 92. 92's are worth 8k right now. This guy is asking 15. You can buy a 96+ for 15k.

Especially this time of year expect to pay like 2000 or more less than during spring or summer. Even with the low miles I wouldent expect to pay more than 8.5k this time of year for such cars even on florida. But thats me and I'm a real scrooge with $$$.

Edit: the SL is a high 14, low 15 second car...quick. Automatic SL is junk, 5-Speed is good. Not fast, but definitely quick.

yeah, im not so sure about the first 3k GT, im gonna try and get him down to about 8k, hopefully lower, any certain problems i should look for in a VR4 with 53k milse on it? i wanna make sure i buy the right car so i dont end up like most VR4 owners..in debt and f'ed in the a-hole.

They're not as fast as VR4s but I wouldn't consider them junk. And c'mon, aren't all GTs family here? Hehe Don't hate on us SLers/bases like that. :p

i wuld say it all depends on what you want. the stealth tt/3000gt vr-4 are cars that can houl some ass but they are also wery hungry for gas. my friends vr-4 needs more gas than my other friends firbird 5.7L.

the vr-4 is pure performance and the standard equipment in the car is outstanding everything electric and leather. but the base/sl are much more livable with they spend ALOT less gas and mid 15's arent so bad and they will not brake down. i have had my car for about 2 years and the only thing i have had to do is change a broken thermostat and a new battery.

My VR4 is a headache, but I can't stop loving it. Kinda like girls. Anyway, that first VR4 (to me) looks like a great deal. With that paint and those mods and the mileage, I would go for it. I paid over 8 for mine with 138k on it (new tranny and stuff, mind you). I would recommend one with low mileage; I would not recommend a high mileage VR4.

although 53K miles is nice, expect to do the 60K mile tune up yourself, which isn't bad I dunno maybe ne where from 400-1000 dollars??? Depending on if u do it yourself of not.

The VR4 is like any other performance car. The way its maintained and used leads directly to the number of problems you'll encounter. With the 14 years of combined ownership (two VR4s) I've had no more issues then my Honda or Dodge has had. (The Delorean is another story).

^ Thats it right there. Like so many have already said, if the car has been beaten like a red headed step child then prepare for problems. But if its been treated like an old woman owned it, then as long as you take care of it it will take of you. Before buying the car, inquire the owner about how he treated the car. Be subtle. Ask him if he's taken it to the track. Tell him about your racing stories (make em up if you have to) and maybe he'll bite and tell ya about all street races he's been in or maybe he'll have no stories. Maybe he's never raced it, which is a good thing for you. That may give you an idea on how he treated the car.

Well, after owning a 3000gt sl for 1 year and a 3000gt vr4 for almost 1 year...If ur getting a 3000gt either is a great choice. I honestly had almost as much fun in my black sl as my red vr4. However, the vr4 has the speed for the looks the car has and any challengers better know what they're shit before challenging. You'll get a lot of challenges and then when they find out its a TT AWD...they pussy out, MOST the time. Anyways, I agree with black what he said about the high maintenance the first year. 3 days out of the dealership i bought my 98 vr4 from...engine blew. If u've drove the car before, u'd know it's hard to drive it like a normal car. It's just so fast and tempting that i'm betting around 80% of those vr4s for sale arent' worth the buy. However, if ur lucky u can find a good condition vr4 all around but they aren't cheap.
