checking trans fluid

I attempted to check the level of my trans fluid yesterday. Much to my dismay it seems to be nearly impossible to get a positive reading. When, after following the explicit instructions listed in the owners manual, I pull the dipstick all I can see is a slurry of fluid all over the bottom of the stick. There is no clear line to indicate the level of the fluid as there is when checking the engine oil.
Has anyone else been able to successfully check their trans fluid level?
P.S. - I also cannot seem to locate the Power Steering filler cap. I'd like to check the fluid level for that as well.
Thanks,

I've checked my fluid before and never noticed anything out of the ordinary. Remember, check the fluid warm, (I would drive it several miles then check it with the engine running). The fluid level will be significantly higher with the transmision warm.
