Electrical problem / alarm won't turn off

Howdy folks,

I am the proud owner of a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. I have not had any problems with the electrical until the past few days.

Yesterday, my wife came home from shopping and when she opened the trunk to unload the bags, the alarm started blaring and the shut off switch on the remote would not turn it off. It finally, after about 5 minutes, went off by itself. But now, everytime we open the door or the trunk, the alarm starts blaring.

I never even knew the car had an alarm. We've had it for 6 years and have never used an alarm. All of the sudden, it just starts blaring. The car will not start when the alarm is blaring and nothing we do will stop it.

If anyone has knowledge of a kill switch or can walk an automotive newbie through disabling an alarm, I would be very grateful. Our next step is to have it towed to a shop. The car runs great otherwise, so if we can just kill/disable the alarm, I think that would work.

Thanks,
Michael

I would try changing the battery in the remote, on most cars, not sure on the cherokee, if you lock and then unlock the drivers door with the KEY, that is usually what disables it. Give it a try, I'm sure you will have more replies soon if that doesn't work for you.

Or ask her did she lock the car with the key.. Becuase that is one function the have on jeeps. So just lock the car with the key and then unlock it and change the battery in your remote and you should be ok....
