Fuel Pump Changed - Questions though

I had been having intermittent cutout problems when I was driving in WOT, the engine would cutout, blow the fuel pump fuse, and then die on the road. I finally narrowed it down to the fuel pump. The changed the fuel pump today and then I drove the car in WOT. First off, it seems to be a lot smoother. Is it possible that on the previous fuel pump that the fuel sock was clogged making the pump work twice as hard and then blowing the fuse and that the actual fuel pump was fine? When I changed the fuel pump today, I changed the whole assembly. Is the fuel pump supposed to allow contaminates through and then the fuel filter is supposed to catch the contaminates in the tank? Does the fuel pump sock attached to the assembly act as a second fuel filter?

The sock stops the larger debris from entering the pump and the smaller particles will be caught at the fuel filter.....what did the old sock look like????
