I bought a replacement trans for my 95 SLE. The repl differs in several ways from the original. Worst of all, the new trans arrived without the metal tag that provides the year, model and gear ratio. I am told by the GM dealer that only a 5BXW will fit my 95 Bonneville, but those numbers only appear on the aluminum tag that is missing from the replacement trans.

Because of the obvious differences listed below, I suspect that the new trans is not from a 95 Bonneville, but I want to make sure before I confront the yard that sold me the replacement so they don't try to blow me off.

Here are the differences:

Old trans: Dipstick has red ring handle
New trans: Dipstick has black T handle

Old trans: Big Casting number 725
New trans: Big casting number 727

Old trans: Electrical fitting at shift lever has no disconnect
New trans: Electrical fitting at shift lever has flat 7 pin connector

Old trans: Identification tag: Model - BX; Julian date - 139; Year - 5; Type - W; Plant - W; Serial no. - 40T4
New trans: Identification tag missing (uh oh)

Old trans number cast on side of case: CFD 725 24202287
New trans number cast on side of case: CFD 727 24200113

Old trans number stamped on top of case 139 2 302 / 139 2 402 / 24
New trans number stamped on top of case 285 131 304

Old trans torque converter tag: FL9B 867 4218
New trans torque converter tag: FJ9B 867 6646

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I found a stamping on the trans that I was able to decode to reveal that the new trans was originally installed in a '94 chevy. I learned from the torque converter tag that it was either used with a 3.1 or 3.4 engine. The pontiac factory service manual shows different internal electronic connections and mechanical parts for the 4T60E depending on whether it is built for 3.8 or the 3.4.

If the trans would work at all (which is doubtful owing to the mismatched electrical connections), it would not work properly because it was built to be used with a 3.8.

All 4T60E transmissions (even with the same gear ratios) are not the same.

This trans will be going back to the seller.
