Ghost in the headlights

Hello all- new to this forum but hope to return regularly Re: my 1994 Firebird Formula .
Down to business:
One fine day my headlights started popping up when I put the switch in the parking light position. The headlights would stay off ,though,until you move to the full on position.
When I turn off the switch the lights go down and off BUT the motors geep going and rattling- (I'm afraid something is grinding). After about 5 seconds it stops and all is ok.
Does this sound like a crazy light switch? if so how do you get it out??
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have a ground gear. They sell replacements on ebay that come with a stronger bronze replacement gear instead of the plastic cheap ones used from the factory. It will come with everything need to do the job including instructions. Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

also search the web there are many site showing how to do this i had the same problem if you dont want to spend any money you can just turn the gear to a spot that is not damaged but i sugest spending the money cuz they go out later on and the kits are only like 20-30 bucks i think it been about a year since i did mine

One or both of your headlight motors have stripped gears, they're cheap plastic and don't last long at all. Go to this site: http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/headlightfix/index.htm it has all the info you'll need to replace the gears and you can buy the replacement metal gears from there as well so this will never happen again. By the way the reason they pop up with the parking lights is to warn you that something is wrong with them (bad gears).

I spent some time surfing for this problem and came up with the same thing- just find it hard to believe that BOTH lights stripped at the same time exactly without warning. I guess it's a in the nature of plastic.
I must say this light system approaches the realm of voodoo. And who in their right mind ever came up with the idea of plastic gears in the first place. Hope there's a special place in hell for him.
One question - If i fix one and test the lights will it strip again since the other one is still running. Or does the sensor or whatever it is control the lights separately?.
I guess there's a brass gear or two in my future- (talk about a niche business).

they were thinking $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ plastic is cheap nope you can do one at a time and be fine when mine went to crap only one did it
