stuck gear shift?

I have a '94 Nissan Sentra sedan... and I'm starting to have problems...(well, I had lots of problems as it neared the 10 year mark).
The car is an automatic, and what happens is that the gearshift was acting up. When switching gears, it was a bit tight at times... and now, what happened is that the button(on the handle) wouldn't lock. The immediate result of this is that I can't start the car, 'cause the gearshift won't LOCK on P.
After a few minutes, I finally got it to lock... and I started the engine... and now the button is stuck IN. I drove home from work with my right hand on the gear shift, making sure it stays on D.
When I got home, because the button is stuck IN, it won't LOCK into P... so now my car keys are stuck!
ARgh!!
Anyone know what might be the problem? I'll be taking it to a mechanic soon... but thought maybe some of you experts have been through this experience...
