Can you go to a junk yard and get a radio out of the same kind of car that you have and put it in yours? Also, like if your car doesn't have a factory installed radio with a CD Player, could you put one from another car in your?

The newer ones retain part of the VIN #, its a new GM anti theft device. Once a radio is removed from a 2000 and newer, it can not be used in any other car. Dont believe it? ask pontiac. I used to have a 2003 grand am GT1.

Well, I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand AM. Do do you think if I got the radio out of a 1996 Grand AM It would work?

Take yours along with you and compare overall shape (some have built in amps that make them bigger), and check the electrical plug.

So if they are the same size and have the same cords, it should be fine?

Yup.
Check that it mounts the same too.
