What kind of gauges are you installing? Usually the indiglo types are just overlays.

Yeah they are overlays but there is a piece of plastic around them and the needles need to come off but I don't know how to remove either.(1998 accord automatic)

I've never installed guages myself, but to my understanding, you're supposed to just turn the needle to point straight up in order to slip the new face behind it.

You don't remove the needles. Removing the needles can screw up the calibration. You slip the needle through the hole in the middle of the overlays and then install the overlays that way. It takes more time and can be harder, but this is the proper way to do it. Where the hole in the overlay is that goes around the needle base, you slip the needle through this and move the overlays into postion this way, without touching the needles. The Speedo and Tach are pretty user, it's the dual gauges like the fuel/temp gauge on a civic ex/si that can be tricky.
The plastic you refer to is the plastic covering the gauges, correct? That removes with clips from the backside usually. You should see once the gauges are out of the car. Once that is off, install the gauges without removing the needles as mentioned above.
