92 Cherokee NSS

I think I may have a bad NSS. I've tested it at the connector with a multimeter and only found continuity when I bring the gear shift back almost into reverse. I want to make sure that's the problem before I replace it. Is there a second way to test it? If not, can the switch be cleaned and reused? My original symptons were no start, no crank, nothing. I've replaced the starter assembly (which was going bad anyway), the ignition switch and the starter relay. Those were cheap compared to the price of this NSS. I really don't want to put that kind of money into this part if that's not the problem. Can anyone think of something else I can do?

Thanks for the site. It had what I needed. Unfortunately, cleaning the NSS didn't fix it (though it definitely needed cleaning).

I can't start this thing. It won't turn over at all. I've replaced the Starter, Ignition Switch, Battery and Starter Relay. They all were in really bad shape but I can't get this to start. I've also checked my cables and fuses. Everything seems to look fine but I'm stuck. Anybody have any ideas?

One more thing. If I turn the ignition on and jump the starter, it will start and run. When I turn it off, it still won't crank.

your NSS connector sould have a black wire with a tan tracer and a brown wire with a yellow tracer.

Make sure the transmission is NOT in gear and connect a jumper between the two. If you can now start it, the problem is in the NSS.

Do not run the vehicle with this jumper installed. Replace the NSS!!!!!

If you pull the starter relay out of the power distribution center, you should find one of the connectors hot all the time and one of the others hot only when the key is in the start position.

You should have full battery voltage at each.

If the one is not hot all the time, then check fuse # 10 in the PDC.

If the other isn't hot when the switch is in the start position, check your connections to the ignition switch.

It looks like the start line isn't hot. I checked continuity from the connector at the switch to the connector at the PDC and it checked good. Could the bar be not pushing the switch all the way into the start position? I was having problems with actuation bar when I replaced the ignition switch. I hit a point where I couldn't even turn the key. As I was going through the installation procedures, I couldn't turn the key backwards into the accessory position. I talked to the owner and she said she's never been able to do that.

Fuse #11 is a 60 amp fuse in the PDC. Check that you have battery voltage on both terminals of the fuse. this fuse protects the power for the ignition switch.

If you have battery volts there, then the fuse is good and the problem is in the ignition switch somehow.

If you go to the ignition switch connector, the wire from fuse 11 is the red one and the wire to the starter relay is the yellow.

Red one is hot all the time, yellow only when key is in the start position.

I have a 1997 Jeep cherokee country with 118k and I am having a similar problem. Ocassionaly my jeep acts like its in drive when you try to start it even though it's in park. You can turn the key to the start position and hold it and the emergency or parking brake light comes on. As soon as you let go of the key the light goes out. If you leave it sit for about an hour it will start right up. Its done this twice in the past two days. I'm not sure what would cause it to do this. Could it be the NSS? I've been told it could be the starter but I don't want to buy one if I don't have to. Any help would be greatly appricated.

When you changed the ignition switch - Did you move the ignition switch slider to the off unlocked position ( move the slider all the way down, then bac two clicks). The remote rod hole in the ignition switch slider should now be centered. Insert the remote rod in theignition switch slider hole and install switch on column & tighten screws. dale

I noticed that my reverse lights were not working so I decided to clean then NSS. As soon as I opened it I saw the problem. One of the contacts was not pushing out like it was supposed to. I pulled it out cleaned the the arm and contacts and regreased everything. That fixed my reverse lights and hopefully my starting problem.
