98' Passat recently replaced Ignition Modulator for $500 (Dec.18/04) and on 1/1/05, turned door key wrong way and radio's gone into theft mode.(NO SAFE Mode seen). In order to get radio code, to get the radio/cd player to work again, these people expect us to go to the dealer, where he'll get the code out the the radio. Problem is, this service dept. is incomp. at best, and will charge me no less than $40 for the code thats mine!!!
THe folks at VWUSA were nice enough on the phone, but do they really believe that someone would try to gain this code number in order to STEAL a VW Radio? PaaaLeeeeeeeease!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the radio blank except for the theft light that blinks?

I don't think the little diode light is even blinking at this point, boschman.
VWUSA said to have dealer look at it. I've got to take it in on a recall for lower control arms - to replace both, but I don't trust this dealer at all. Last time I had a problem, it took 3 trips, 3 weeks total, I wound up finding the fluid leak they couldn't, and they ruined the grill with a fine splash of brake fluid they then claimed they didn't do (after replacing the master cylinder)
Because of this dealer, this is my last VW for the foreseeable. I'm done.

Yes, it is looking for you to enter the securty code. It is an attachment to the owners manual. If lost the dealer is cheapest (if you get the radio serial number for them) but there are places on the web that can get it for you also.

Please please please.....what places? I managed to short the alternator to ground when I was replacing the PITA oil line under in the intake manifold. I picked up the keys off of ebay for the radio....just need to know where to get the code and NOT get raped financially.

Dealer is the easiest, usually about $30 if you get the radio serial number (which the onlin guys need anyway).

If the car was purchased from a VW dealer they have to provide it, if they didn't when you first bought it (new or used). As far as I know if you provide them with the radio/cd serial number they can get for you at NO CHARGE. I was told that there was a $90 charge (1 hour labor to remove the radio and put it back) needed.
On the other hand, get that serial number and run to a VW dealer service desk. If you are nice enough to the girl at the desk, she'll do you that favor.
PS. Girls, don't get me wrong for this please!

At our local dealer only the service writers have access to VW's webite to retrieve the codes. They used to get them for me for free, but lately have been under alot of pressure to charge for it now (officially $30). Pulling the radio youself & getting the serial number off it will save that labor charge.
