If, as some believe, the mind and the body are the same entity then how can consciousness be explained as a physical process?

Im sure there has to be some way to explain it, or the whole dualism idea wouldnt ever have been in question.

consciousness is the firing of neurons inside the brain, interacting with other neurons creating ideas, blah blah blah.

but what about for example knowing that you exist? I understand how the brain works if say you want to move your arm, but consciousness is more of an understanding of whats going on.
