Does anyone have 6 x 9 speakers in their firebird? I have a 99 Firebird, and I am curious to know if they fit in the normal slots in the rear.
I bought some 6 1/2 speakers and they are not doing me justice.

The 6x9 fit in the rear speaker slot behind the rear seat in my '94 Trans-Am, but Im not sure if the back seat speakers are still 6x9s.

hey
yea, the rear seat speakers are now 6.5, but i guess I could put some 6 x 9's behind the seat. do you know where i can get the hatchback pieces that have the speaker holes cut in them or would I have to make the holes myself?

Im pretty sure that some T/A's had the holes cut from the factory. I would check salvage yards, ebay, and maybe the dealer if you want to buy one new. My holes and grill pieces looked factory anyway. Good luck.

I pulled my hatch pieces off and I have 2 wires already pre-run on each side in that area that is not connected to anything. The left wire is slightly bigger than the right side. Do you think the left is a for a subwoofer & the right for a smaller speaker?
Or does anyone know

The left, I'm pretty sure, is bigger because it's already prewired for the factory CD Changer that would normally be on that "shelf-like/step-like" area in the back left in your hatch area. It should have one large plug and a smaller plug. The large plug is for the CD changer, and the smaller one of course is for the speaker. I'm assuming that you don't have the Monsoon sound system since you don't have the speakers in the rear. What I would suggest is to go to a junk yard and find a firebird between the years of 1993 and 2002 that have those same colored panels in the back that are already equipped with the speakers in them. The speakers in them aren't that great (IMO), so what some people do is cut a hole in it and rig up a 6x9 speaker holder in it. It's really up to you.

Ok here's the deal my friend... i have a 2000 firebird and believe me i hated the stock sound system. Your firebird can have 6 by 9s however i would not hang them in the hatchback area. Here is what i did, on either side of the rear "seats" there are 7" rounds, pull those out and take the speaker cover off. now make sure you trace the hole where the speaker was on the metal as a reference. you can, if you are willing and patient, fit 6 by 9s int this spot. make sure that you drill into the metal at several point to hold the speakers in place. when you put the panel back on you might have to cut some of it off, i did not however, and if you do cut some off you should be able to take it to any reputable sound shop and they can make some covers for you out of plexiglass. not only will it sound better, louder, and clearer with the 6 by 9s closer to you, it will look awesome with plexiglass covering them. I personally used smoked plexiglass with blue neons on either side of the speakers... it looks killer at night.
I hope this helps.

Wow egoman, sounds awesome. Got any pics of it by any chance? I wouldn't mind seeing that.

I have always believed that 4 good speakers is better than 10 crappy ones. If you have subs in the rear, you only need 2 good speakers in the front if they are set up properly...

I hate to post a negative thought on what someone said but... There is no way that you can get great sound from only 2 speakers in the front and subs in the back. You need speakers infront and behind you to get a full sound. Even if you had focal speakers in the front, there is no way to get a GREAT sound without another pair behind you to even the sound out.

If your subs don't suck ass, you wont hear the rear speakers (as the driver anyway) if they are behind you. The subs overpower them. You might catch misc. mids and highs...its not like you're losing significant sound quality. Plus 10 shitty speakers aren't worth 2 good ones was my main point.

First Im sorry i missed your main point. Because now that you pointed that out it is very true. However I still disagree with you synopsis about not hearing your rear speakers if they are behind you. You should hear them perfectly if they are any good.

well if your front speakers are full range speakers then it wont matter
if your front speakers only do highs then it will matter
since the trans am speakers are full range in front and the rear speakers just do low end. their is no reason to have them there
