question about engine replacement

I have a dead 4.3 v6 (code x 1996) with sequential electronic fuel injection and have to replace it with another engine, can I just use my sequential system on the new engine?(any year) Or do I have to use a 96 to date motor because of sensors? Would a 96 to date engine work properly with the OBD II system and the 96 computer if not what years will?
How about bolt patterns for head/intake manifolds.

If your buying used try sticking to the same year and it's easiest.
And try talking them into selling you the complete motor, including leave all the brackets, alternator, and what not on. It makes it an easier swap., besides they'll get all your stuff back when you turn in the core.

If your buying re-built the engine shop will get you the right motor, since it's their job.
If you get a short block it'll cost you a fair amount less, but require your heads, manifolds and what not, where if you buy a long block that stuff is mostly included (depending on the shop) and you can probably do the engine swap during a weekend easily.
