1996 Jetta Trek Broken hood release cable

Does anyone have a idea on how to get the engine hood open, the cable is broken.

This is probably too late, but...

Get under the car and follow where the broken cable connects to the backside of the metal framework that holds your headlights. Pull the release towards the drivers side.

I am assuming that the cable is still visible...? If it is, simply take a pair of pliers and pull it. POP

while we are on the topic, the Jetta that I will be getting has a problem with opening the hood. There was a recall done on 96 Jettas for the hood release and apparently the dummy who previously owned the car did not take it in to get it done. I have to have someone pull up on the hood while I pull the lver to open it. Any ideas?
