Hi all i plan on turboing my 01 RS this summer and i have a few questions. first off i am trying to put together a list or parts i am going to need and so far all i have picked out is the turbo its self so i need help in choosing other parts.
here's the list
T3/T04E turbocharger Turbonetics 50 Trim T04E Compressor
fuel management? i have read most people like the greddy E manage? but are there other or better options
also am i going to need to do a new exhaust system or will the stock 2.5" ( i believe) do fine?
new injectors? what size would be recomended
please fill in anything else that i may have missed i am trying to keep this on the low budget end so if you could point me in the direction of a good place to get used parts it would be great.
thanks for your time

you can go with the 440 1g/2g injectors. ive heard that the emanage is about the best. thats what i would go with. go with a 3'' exhaust. some people go custom with the exhaust with a high flow cat. i dont know if that turbo has an internal wastegauge. if not, then you would need one of those. most people use tial

thanks wont i also need an intercooler and where could i find some decent used parts also the injectors you mentioned the 1g/2g means from a first or second gen eclipse? oh and will i need to put in new headers? or should stock be able to handle the power increase.

Thi is just the asshole in me coming out... but when you said "oh and will i need to put in new headers? or should stock be able to handle the power increase." Well this is exactly when I knew you have no idea what you are talking about. Not that their is nothing wrong with this, but by your first post Ithought you might have some knowledge of turbo's. First off... there are no header's on turbo's...they use an exhaust manifold. Contraire to popular belief header's, and manifold are two different things. Please go to this website and look around. It will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about turbo's, and everything else you never wanted to know about anything! http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm

i have been to that site previously and read about turbos on fiautosports.com and your right i dont know too much about it but by the time i am ready to order the parts i should have sufficient knowledge.
the only reason i asked about the headers was because i thought with the power increase i need to strength engine parts and i thought that perhaps with the amount of power being added that it might crack the headers.

i guess this is the asshole in me....but tell me the difference between headers and exhaust manifolds. how about you do your homework. take a look at the site you gave. go to the search bar at the top and type in "exhaust manifold". in the results, you will see a link for "How Do Exhaust Headers Work To Improve Engine Performance?" from HowStuffWorks. please read that article before you decide to be an asshole again. thank you and ill be here all night
back on topic, yes you will need an intercooler if you plan on running more than 5psi. and for the "headers/exhaust manifold", the turbo manifold/turbo headers from the 2G GST/GSX will bolt right up to your RS. just to let you know, the piping from the intercooler to the throttle body is the crucial part of the kit. if you can get quality pipes, the rest will take care of itself

If I'm wrong I appologize. I found this litte atricle on the web which best explain's why I believe there is a difference between header's, and exhaust manifolds... but I have been wrong before.
"Exhaust gases leaving the combustion chamber are forced out by the piston on its up-stroke. Any resistance from the exhaust manifold results in power loss. Typically a stock manifold has a common chamber where the gasses must meet before they move down into the H-pipe. If the exiting gasses run into each other they create back pressure. Headers are individual pipes which allow the gasses to flow more easily into the area where they are collected. Equal length headers insure that the pulse associated with the escaping gasses is timed correctly so that each meets at the collector separately. Headers are an excellent method of freeing up valuable power. Typically they can produce 15-20 hp. Long-tube headers are also good for some additional low-end torque"

in this article, it refers to headers and exhaust manifolds as one and the same. thats b/c they are the same. just two different names.

you can use the header from the gst/gsx, but you will not be able to run the t3/t4. its too big and will hit your a/c. you'll have to use a 16G turbo, which is just as good, if not better than the t3/t4. its smaller, allowing it to spool up a bit quicker, and its durability has been long proven. you will also need to get the oil feed fitting welded to oil pan. any good welding shop can easily do this. also youll have to get the e-manage tuned. find a good car shop with a dyno to do this. hardest part, if you buy a kit, is taking off the front bumper, but from there on out, its (with a kit) a bolt on job. you didnt say if its auto, manual. also you need bigger tires. 225's should work. there are so many more things you can do, but you better have a big budget.

i did not know about the t3/t4 not being about to fit with the gst/gsx headers. dont forget about a bov. i dont know how you can forget about that. also, i thought he was just asking about parts for the turbo kit so tires would not be included. there are tons of other parts he would need for his car that arent exclusively for the turbo kit

very true, tires were just something i was thinking of at the time. you could sit for hours thinking of all the little things. either way, a kit is the best way to go. good luck syn!

thanks for all of your help i will definitely post in the comming months on the progress.
it is manual transmition also you mentioned tires is that just so i will have better traction for increased power?

yes b/c traction will probably be the biggest problem...also dont forget about the electronics side of it, like an electronic boost controller. and dont forget about gauges

when i do the installation do i permantly lose my front bumper due to the intercooler? if so then if i get into a minor crash would it cause a huge difference in damage to the front end the it wold if i still had the bumper in?
you'lll have to excuse me on this issue i dont fully understand the intercooler mounting.

no no no...you will keep your front bumper. but depending on the piping, you might lose one of you bumper support brackets. if you go over to www.club3g.com, pm eclipsePenguins, napalm, or xull1x. they have installed intercoolers on their RS/GS. they would probably be able to help you out the most since they have been through it. dont tell me you really thought that you were going to drive around with no front bumper??
Syn48
01-04-2005, 02:55 PM
lol well i was thinking about it to day cuz a previous post said somthing about taking off the front bumper to put in the intercooler and i though doesnt seem like there is much room in that area so would i lose the bumper permanetly.
Also i know it has been discussed before but a turbo should really effect my gas mileage unless i am driving in high rpms right?

well yeah you will have to take off you front bumper, but you put it back on...lol. you are right about the room for an intercooler. a 27x7x3 FMIC should do the trick.
i dont know much about the gas, but i think it would also depend on how much boost you are running. more boost= more air, more air=more fuel
speaking of fuel, dont forget to upgrade you fuel pump. most people go with the Walbro 255lph fuel pump

ok cool i just found out that a guy i work with just smashed up his 01 gts and i was wondering if his exhaust header will work on my ride. also should i even think of asking for his ecu or anything like if anyone could help me make a quick list of what to ask for.
thanks

None of that will work on your car. Since his is a V-6, and your's is a I-4. About the only thing you can trade out is the air filter element. Hey could you ask him how much he wants for his stereo display and deck? Possible his dash speaker as well?

all right i am going to make my final list now but if i miss something let me know and i will add.
Small 16g turbo from fiautosports
Walbro 255 lph fuel pump
27x7x3 FMIC intercooler (anybrands?)
oil return line kit (ebay)
2g gsx-gst headers
Greddy Emanage
what should i do for exhaust and what would happen if i ran the turbo with stock exhuast for a little while?
downpipe? (is this needed?)
BOV ( any recomended?)
Tial 38mm wastegate, 5.8psi spring (.4bar)
450cc injector
and some gauges
y can ask him about the stuff but i dont know what he has his car was totaled

with the exhaust, you can run the stock as long as you want. all its going to do is restrict your peak hp. the bigger the exhaust, the more exhaust gases can escape, the more horsepower you will get out of it. some people go to a local shop and get a custom 3'' exhaust, some go with a Greddy evo II, some go with magnaflow, some go with the Apexi N1.
i believe Spearco makes an intercooler that size.
you could try out the Greddy S-type BOV

how much power would i actually lose by running stock exhaust? because i meanits already 2.25" what more can the .75" bring. i understand that the cat system is what will allow more power?i i would like to at some point do a full exhaust after the turbo but like i said i dont have a huge budget to work with i am only 17 so, but thanks for all your help i will be posting when i do the install sometime this summer.

you would probably loose 15-20 hp somewhere around there

I thought I rad somewhere that the turbo manifold off a 1st, and 2nd gen eclise wil fit our cars? Anyone know any truth to this?

the turbo manifold off a 2g will fit on a 3G RS/GS. but Syn48 said that his friend smashed his 01' GTS. the GTS manifold will not work on a 3G RS/GS. The GT/GTS is a V6 and and the RS/GS is 4cyl.

and if he rearends someone, a lousy intercooler will be the least of his problems. riding around with no front bumper- c'mon man! if you couldnt figure that out, maybe you ought to skip the turbo, and leave it stock. same thing with the header. gain some common knowledge before you consider a turbo instal. im trying not to be a dick, but.....
