Help!! I have a 2000 Astro with 60000+. Did the unthinkable and used discount autoparts cap and rotor. Vehicle ran fine prior. 2 Months later started running rough, service light came on. Cap and rotor was burnt. Replace cap, rotor, wires and plugs with NAPA parts. Now 3 months later vehicle running rough. Pulled cap again. Phosphorus burns and contacts burnt. Lots of condensation. Any ideas?

If I had to guess I'd say you weren't getting them seated properly. The rotor needs to be seated pretty well.
Also, you could just have got a bad set. I bought what the local parts store said was there best set of cap/rotor. I got it home and installed it. Ran it for a few days and it seemed to be getting a worse. I took the cap/rotor off only to find one of the terminals was loose in the cap. Just a bad one from the manufacturer. It happens. I must say that I've never had a problem using AC/Delco or Accel cap/rotors. But I have over the years with just about every other brand...

If you are going through caps and rotor in that short peroid of time, you must be noticing miss fires or at least some kind of hesitation through out the driving range. A miss fire might be felt as a slight jerk or bump while driving, are you experiencing any of these?
When you install new plug wires, cap and rotor, before you put the dog house back on make sure all the plug wires are secured back so they can not come in to contact with the aluminium heat sheild on the back of the dog house, very important. Did you have your codes read, when you check engine light came on, and if you did what did they report?

First off....I apreciate the responses! I have felt the misfires. Suttle at first and then the service engine light comes on. Had the code read and it just comes up random misfire. I have the new wires ran through the stock wire holders and I dont believe they are in contact with the heat shield. When I replace the cap and rotor it runs perfect for 2-3 months and then the misfires begin and slowly worsen. I had an 87 Astro that I put 260,000 miles on without a major overhaul. I did have to rebuild the distributor and do some other small maintainance items to but never experienced a cap/rotor problem like this.

Can you remember what the posts that go through the distributor cap, look like? Are they brass coloured or are they silver coloured, I personally find that the brass colored ones "SUCK", I find what ever vehicle I use them in, they oxidize quickly, sometimes with green stuff, and the inside of the rotor cap always get covered in this powder looking stuff that looks like welding flash. So I always stick to the silver or aluminium colored ones. This could be your problem.

Hey tableman. Inserts are brass. Atleast they were when I installed them. When I pulled the cap this last time they looked as you described them, green with white dust all on the terminals. I had heard that the brass was supposed to be better because of the conductivity. Maybe I will try something other than brass.

Pull the cap and see if the gasket around the ignition module is still there. If not the condensation you see is maybe causing the problems. Replace cap and put a bead of silicone around the slot for the seal to the module. Might help?
