98 Blazer Flasher works without switch on

My 98 Blazer has 86K on it. Recently, the TS flasher started clicking intermittently when the signal was not on. The signals and the emergency flashers work fine. Just an annoyance to hear the thing click. Any Suggestions?

The flasher should only click when there is a load on the system. I would probably try replacing that first.

I asked at the NAPA store and they said there is probaby a short in the turn signal or 4-way flasher unit in the steering column. The same flasher controls both. I will try replacing it first.

Thanks

I show the flasher to be on the far right side.

Yes, it is behind the glovebox. I took the old one out and checked for corroded terminals, but they looked fine. It made no difference when I plugged it back in. Will try a new one and hope that fixes the problem.

I replaced the flasher, but it did the same thing. Could it be a problem with a ground somewhere?

I have been told by a mechanic that the multi function switch in the steering column causes the clicking. I have read in some other forum, cannot remember where but cleaning contacts in the switch takes care of the problem, but there is a problem to get to it, called the air bag.

I think you are right, it is in the MF switch. Have you seen any directions or accessing the switch, or it is a dealer item?

It is the multi function switch, you can replace it with out the steering column removal, it take about an hour in half... Oh by the way the 1999 also has the same problems, and the same with 2000 - 2001 blazer to but gm was nice to recall them... Made in Mexico, maybe the explaination... oh by the way NHTSB has numerous complaints on this multi function switch, and GM claims no problem.. good luck and what an annoyance that was on mine....

I also have a 98 Blazer 4.3 4X4 4dr
Had the same problem, the multi-function switch (MF) has been a problem as I can see here and other forums, its in the steering column. BE AWARE.. if you do the job yourself disconnect the battery and pull the fuse that operates the air bag deployment. cant remember which panel, either under the hood ...or... open the drivers door and theres a panel on the side of the dash by the steering wheel.

Was there a recall on this? I have a 2000 model blazer that has the same problem, I hear the turn signal relay clicking when the signals are not on. I have tryed replacing the relay, didn't fix it. I know the problem is with the turn signal switch, but I have never messed with an airbag before!!

I think your in luck.. Call the dealer or gm customer service.. You will find out there is a recall campaign on your multifunction switch

I just had this replaced a week ago because of this same problem on my 99 Blazer. When the clicking first started happening, I seached the internet and found this forum...where this problem is listed ALOT!

The campaign #01073A was actually for the brake lights and hazard lights not working. It's listed for 2000 & 2001 only. Usually the hazard switch (just the red button) gets replaced.
