Turbo exhaust

I have finally decided to turbo my D16y8. ya ya ya..i should swap but hey..i like to be different. anyway. i wont have the money for the turbo for a while, but i want to go ahead and make some mods. i want to put an exhaust on my car. but i dont want to get something that will hinder my turbo performance. I also dont like the pissed off bumble bee sound. i dont want something offensive or anything. i head the apexi WS series isn't a really loud exhaust..anyone have any experience with this? plust the tip isn't 10 times larger than the muffler. which is really ugly in my opinion. anyway back to the question at hand. does anyone have any suggestions on an exhaust that would work well on N/A motor and still complement turbo power. preferable with a throaty tone.

Tanabe? It sounds like ASS! I can't decide what it sounds like more. A pissed off weed wacker or a pissed off bee. It might sound good to a ricer, but not a serious import tuner.

just run an open wastegate, you wont have to worry about what your exhaust sounds like :D

Maybe you're thinking of a Tanobo or some other flea market brand right next to the rockwood and kenfords. Because a REAL tanabe kicks ass!

no its just instead of venting the wastegate back into the exhaust system you vent it into the open air. just picture the sound of a jet taking off, its quite impressive.

I like the HKS hiper mufflers, and now you can get them in titanium. There is a turbo type-r here with one, can't wait to hear it

An external wastegate is just a wastegate outside the turbine housing. An internal wastegate is built inside the turbine housing.
If you do have an external wastegate, you have the choice to route the 'waste' exhaust gasses back into the exhaust system - called 'closed loop' or just vent them directly to the atmosphere - called 'open loop'. The jet taking off is the sound of an 'open loop' dump. It is of course, highly illegal for a street car since it just dumps exhaust gas straight outside without a cat or a muffler. If you have an internal wastegate, it pretty much has to be closed loop since it's inside the housing.
Here's a site with some turbo terminology defined:

white97ex - if you're going to go turbo, the biggest exaust you can fit will give you the best performance. 3" would be good. But that will likely really hurt your NA performance. Save the money for now, and have the new exhaust swapped in at the same time as the turbo. Check out the Thermal R&D exhaust - they make a beautiful 3" mandrel bent stainless exhaust just for turboed civics. www.thermalrd.com

holy cow.....a productive reply aimed at my original question :finger: ok..there is number one....two.....is the exhaust system exchangable from a 97 ex to a 2000 ex? my fiance drives a 2000. and if i get an exhaust i could put it on her car when i get turbo..win win situation. or maybe i'll wait. what would be some good performance adding mods. that will help N/A and also when i go turbo....any...hehehe probably not.. aside from programmable ecu....i think they are out of the budget for now....

Not sure what is interchangeable between N/A and turbo, but two things that are NOT are headers and a CAI.

yeah..i know parts interchangability between N/A and Turbo. its kind of common sense. I was asking about interchangability of exhaust between a 97 and 2000 civic. also what would add performance to a turbo and N/A car and not have to be thrown out when i go turbo

Nitrous! :D
Mild cams. Cam gears. Throttle Body. Air/ fuel computer (piggyback or full aftermarket ECU). Brakes. Tires. Suspension.

what i will probably end up doing, is doing all the necessary upgrades..then go turbo. i know brakes are a must..as well as suspension. can you get big brake kits with out going to a larger wheel or is going to a larger wheel to my benefit..i want it to look as stock as possible. the only body work i'm doing will be to paint my bullet molding, and color match the side skirts...again...i dont know what we would do around here without the likes of fritz

Most big brake conversion kits I know of require the use of larger rims. Usually about 17's. You can't exactly fit some 14 inch rotors on 14/15 inch tires.

14 inch rotors are some awefully big rotors for an import.....of course i havn't looked into big brake kits yet. i dont want to go much bigger than a 16 inch wheel. I dont want a huge increase in rotating mass. I can get 16's that are lighter than or weigh the same as stock wheels
