I have a 97 Jimmy. Occasionaly it will simply die while driving down the road. It's like it just shuts off, no lights, no warning! I've taken it to a couple different dealers but they say that if there is not a check engine light they cannott diagnos the proplem...has anyone ever heard of or had this problem?

your alternator seems to be going bad. If your driving down the road and your lights go dim then shut off or the cars dies while driving it, it could be your alternator. You can have this tested for free at any auto zone....Thanks

could be alternator, loose/corroded battery connection or ignition switch. Does anything work when the vehicle dies(radio, headlights, heater fan)?

I had the same problem with my 1993 GMC Jimmy last week. Changed the ingnition coil because it was corroded and that didn't fix the problem. The engine light wouldn't stay on and diagnosing the problem was difficult. I started checking fuel system issues because it seemed more like a fuel cut-off stall than an electrical one. I found it to be both! By accident. I had a mechanic friend looking at it with me and while the vehicle was running he touched the fuel wiring harness. The vehicle shut off just like when I was driving it. We changed the harness and it hasn't stalled at all since. Tricky little bugger! Found it by mistake. My vehicle would stall periodically in all different types of weather. Turns out that a pothole could have done the trick. Good Luck.
