2000 jetta dying

Hello all,
I have a 2000 jetta that will not run for more than 1-2 seconds. Here is all the info I have.
Car has run fine since new
Drove in heavy rain last night, won't run this morning
LCD for clock and odometer are showing very strange garbage.
Fusses are all good
Battery is good (full charge)
all lights and radio work
When I start the car the engine turns over and runs for 1-2 seconds then just dies, even if I give it gas.
Any ideas?

what engine do you have, could be the coilpack?? lots of problems with them!

I have a 2000 also, the only time mine has done something similar was when I had a new key cut, and it didnt recognize it, it will start for a couple of seconds then die! But thats not your problem. hmm.. got me! But there are a few guys on here that should respond soon that will be able to help you! good luck

It sounds like it may be a faulty dash panel/immobilser not recognising the key-i would take it to a vw place,have them check it out for faults via vag-com or vas equipment.

I talked to a vw service guy, and he thinks the alarm relay is the problem. Off to the shop it goes.

You may want to look at the coil. There a a coil recoil on the A4s. I'm not sure if it covers your vehicle. But many of them cut out when they got wet. Hope you get back on the road soon. :^)

I checked the coil and it is all good, I have been having problems with the doors not locking when I use the remote. The car starts fine, it just runs for a second and then dies like clock work. From everything I can find it still sounds like the "conveinience module" (convineient my ass). Thanks, and if any other ideas come to mind let me know. A trip to the dealer avoided would be great.

It sounds like an instrument cluster failure, the immobiliser function is in there too.

If the immobilizer light in the cluster flashes after the car dies the keys arent programmed to the instrument cluster. This is normal security feature of the system. A convienence module only functions as the antenne for the remote entry feature not any starting features.

I recentlly tried to replace my instrument cluster with one I picked up at the Salvage yard, My vehicle was vandalized, and my present Cluster was damaged. Is there anyway to bypass the immobilizer so the vehicle will not shut down after a few seconds.......Thanks

Not really, you need to get VW or someone with a VAG-COM to reprogram things.

Can the immobilizer be swapped, into the new cluster.

I'm not sure about that, it would probably be easier to just reprogram the vehicle to the replacement unit.
