I was driving about 70 Mph one day when my 87 taurus 3.0 just died on me. I have replaced the coil and made sure I am getting spark. I can also hear the fuel pump working and smell gas when I turn it over. The car will turn over but will not start. The car ran great before it died. I am not sure where to go next.

Did you check for spark at the plugs? Are smelling gas from the exhaust or under the hood? A compression check wouldn't be a bad idea. Have you ever had the timing belt changed?

I did check for spark at the plugs. The gas smell is from under the hood. Can the timing chain be bad if I am still getting spark?

Look for fuel leaks. Check all fuel lines. Check vent lines going to the charcoal cannister.
You can still get spark at the plug if timing belt is bad. Timing belt may have some broken teeth allowing for timing to be way off and inconsistent. Unplug coil wire and take distributer cap off. Turn motor and see if rotor spins.
