Probably 2006 looks like. Also, if your computer has an Athlon 64 processor in it, there will be a 64-bit version of windows coming out in the next 6 months. That should make your computer a little faster.

unfortunately, my computer has an intel suckaron... I've been contemplating a move to the dark side for a while now, are macs really as much better as people make them out to be?

If your thinking about buying a Mac, watch this video first.

^Both are true, but I can deal with the problems of a pc, but I couldn't deal with not being able to play games.

personally I will always need a windows bitch box in my house just for playing games. But yes macs are great for video editing and photo editing. The problem that many people have are with the OS X interface, especially if they come from a windows world. Personally I love the fact that OS X is basicly BSD with a MAC GUI on top. There are a lot of pros and cons to both MACs and PCs though... MACs have great build quiality, I especially love the SMP towers!!! Those would make kick ass servers and I would love to have one if I needed a new server.. but they are expensive as hell and the hardware is mostly proprietary... PC's hardware is generally a lot cheaper and more interoperable.
Here at home this is what I've got:
My windows numbnuts box for playing unreal, GTA and whatever else on. windows 2000 pro.
My wifes laptop: XP pro. Japanese version.
My thinkpad laptop: today it's windows 2000, the other half of the time it's Fedora Core 3 (RedHat Linux)
My Firewall: Fedora Core 3 (used to be BSD but I am more familliar with IPTABLES)
My File Server / Webserver (AKA Blacklinux.com): Fedora Core 3, dual 1Ghz Pentium!!!'s with SCSI RAID for the system and the following Western Digital drives for storage (Music/videos/documents/drivers/OSs/programs/games/pictures/html) 100GB, 200GB, 200GB, 250GB, 250GB, 250GB.
And an old mac that I got for free running yellowdog linux.

Dream Machines would be as follows:
SGI Onyx graphical workstation
Sun Netra file server with fibrechannel or iSCSI
that's all.... :) for now

All right let's turn this thread into a "my computers" thread:

1. Gaming: Athlon 64 3200 (got it a year ago), 1 gig of ram, 36.7 10k rpm SATA, geforce 6800, running xp 32-bit (xp 64-bit had too many bugs)

2. Server: Athlon XP 2700, 256 RAM (needs upgraded bad), 160 SATA, running server 2003

3. Laptop: Pentium M 1.5/512/40Gig @ 5400rpm: everyday use: XP 32-bit

4. Linux: Pentium II 475 MHz 128 RAM, 9.1 Gig HDD, Suse Linux 9.0 Pro

5. (In like a week) Phone server: P4 2.4 GHz 512 RAM, 40 Gig running Server 2003 and Interactive Intelligence's Customer Interaction Client

6. Pocket PC: Dell Axim 30i @ 624 MHz, running Pocket PC 2003

And I will get one of those dual cores as soon as they become available.

are you talking about a game server or just a file server or a webserver or something? I've got 256MB of RAM in my fileserver/webserver/dns/dhcp and it get's thousands of hits a day... I never see load averages higher than 0.05 (except for the nightly cron backup job)

I try to stay as far behind as I can while still being able to do everything I need to do. Just a few months ago I upgraded my main machine from an XP2000 to an XP2500 :) Pretty sad eh? My FTP server is a classic 166 pentium with 32 megs of RAM. It pushes 16MBps though ;)

It has databases running on it (not big ones, just for me to play around on), file server, print server, ftp server, and also use it for remote computing. Where I work and go to school they try to limit the bandwidth usage, so you're not really allowed to do much, so when downloading something big, I just remote desktop to it, and to it there. A lot of times memory usage goes above the 256 mb, and then it uses the virtual memory thing, which makes it slow.

you got that right! althought I do admit that for a day to day box I'd just rather use windows. I never see linux taking over the desktop. Linux is great for static server roles. boxes that stay up and are stable, and do specific tasks. like a webserver, or fileserver or DNS or any other network service or server. But I'm not one of these linux guys that says fuck windows.... your stupid if you use that crap.... you should use linux.. yadda yadda yadda. windows is great for a personal computer. but for a server, my choice is linux. I really wish that these linux distros would stop bloating up the software too... I remember back in the day when KDE2 was the shit. linux had a thin gui that was a hell of a lot faster than windows XP. now it seems like linux is trying to take over the desktop and trying to look all pretty like windows does. well guess what folks.... X windows will never run as smoothly as explorer.exe (your windows GUI) because X windows system runs at such a high level in the system! and now because of this need to try to be pretty like windows.... the newest versions are even worse than windows XP as far as bloat-ware. Fedora Core 3 is almost 7GB for a full install. 7 fucking Gigs? my firewall has a 500MB (MEGABITE!) hard drive. On it I run fedora core 3, minimal install with IPTABLES firewall. what is the other 6.5GB?? well there are perhaps a gig of vital stuff, a few gigs of usefull programs and i'd say at least 2GB of meaningless bloated ass bullshit code so that when you right click on the desktop it fades into place and it's translucent as it does so... or when you put a CD in a little icon pops up and bounces up and down... come the fuck on folks.... dont we realize that this is what makes our systems slow? I mean sure we can turn it off... but shy should I have to sacrafice 2 damn GB of HD space for that shit.... this is a cry out to KDE. PLEASE STOP SUCKING!!! alright I'm done. Time to go to my old redhat 6.2 box and remember when life was a little simpler (too bad you have to be behind a firewall now if you want to run a 6.2 box and not get raped).
