I have a 1994 318i and the other day it just cut off as I was driving along. It will turn over without any problem but will not restart. Any suggestions?

could be the fuel pump(s) or the fuel pump relay. if you turn the ignition to the on position (without attempting to start the car) you should hear the pump worink briefly - if you hear it, then it's some other problem

you have to attempt to start the car then let the key go back to where it would be if the car was running, to hear if the pump is working

I had a similiar problem, car started running a little rough, thought it needed a new fule filter and fuel additive. Then, stalled and wouldn't start. Magically started next day and then never again.
Problem ended up being the fuel computer. It's the box behind the glovebox (easy access by 2 screws) labeled "jetronic" with a bosch sticker and a part number. They are nearly impossible to find at a junkyard but the dealer can get them for $1300. Call 800-269-0683 and you can get one for around $200. They'll need the number off the bosch sticker.
The other source of the problem could be your fuel pump relay which is forward of the left shock tower. It's under a black cover and is about 1x1 squares and about 2 inches tall. If you pull this and jump pin 30 and 87, you should have the pump running and the car should start. If it does, that's your problem. It'll cost you about $50 at any auto parts store.
hope it helps, mine was 2 weeks and $150 of troubleshooting to find the problem...
