Why would the check engine light come on in my 95 Chevy Cavalier? It only comes on sometimes.

A sensor going bad and coming in and out... if it came on the system stores what it was have the codes read and it will tell you what is wrong.

could be a lot of things. if you have an advance auto in the area, they will check the code for free and tell you what is the cause. mostly emissions things cause that light to come on, but it could be something as simple as a loose sensor.

My 2002 cavalier ecotec did it one time. I took it to chevy and they said that the map sensor picked something up. They way they explained it to me was that I got some bad gas and it sensed some garbage in it. I have been using premium and super eversince and I havent had it again. Mainly it is where you get your fuel in this case. The real way to see if you have a proble is to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes(so the computer automatically resets) and connect it again. If the check engine light comes on the you have a problem. Maybe something you did or something is just wearing out. I hope for the best

^^^ damn kid, i swear i am out to get you today... By using 89 and 93 octane dosn't mean thats its cleaner than the 87 you prolly ran through it b4. It has a higher flash point and it more pure..When gas stations have tankers come and refill the resivoirs, they stir crap up on the bottom and takes time to settle out just like particles in water. The pumps there then fill it into your tank and some particles are big enough to pass through your fuel pump but will get stopped in your fuel filter. What you probably did was not completey close the cap and get the click noise that means its closed and will trigger the response you got. Now that you have started to run high grade fuel, if you go back down to 87, a knocking noise can begin to occur. If you going to run 93 you should serously get some colder plugs b4 you mess your car up... NGK TR-6 4177...
