Busted trunk release

My 1998 Avalon XL's trunk release is on the fritz. For a couple of months now, it took 3 or 4 well-timed, gentle pulls to open the trunk; my ignition key won't open the trunk either.
I've called the service depts. of local dealerships. I've been assured that one can pull a release button on the back seat and enter into the trunk area. One guy even told me that there was an emergency trunk release pull--yellow or orange--that I could pull to open the trunk.
Another service rep told me it's my key. Since the trunk lock entry is in the horizontal position, I need to get a new key made by submitting my VIN number and a key can be cut.
I can't find any way to pull the back seat down. Yes, I checked the back seat, arm rest...nothing. Help! Thanks
