So far the only upgrade to my 87 xj is a flowmaster super 40 muffler with 2 1/4 inch piping. Felt a small power increase but the deep tone is amazing. Future up-grades, new paint job and 3 inch lift.

Here are a few of mine, I believe these fall under the simple catagory.

First, my '96 Jeep Cherokee
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/500/282302jeep1.jpg

Bought some ground effects, played around with placement. Ends up pretty cool looking.
This is one light in just behind the grill. It actually fits perfect, I used nothing to hold it in, it just fits snug.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/500/282302jeep2.jpg

The other 3 lights I placed in the back and along the sides of the roof inside. Gives it a nice feel.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/500/282302jeep3.jpg

And of course, I needed switches, so I drilled holes in the dash and wired it all up. I'm guessing you caught the color theme.

I have everything red in my jeep. I even converter the gauges and the switches to light up red along with my floor, what size it the tubein the grill?? also the chrome grill is that a stock one? I thought so but your mirrors, and roof rack is black...

Chase17
01-06-2005, 09:15 PM
No, the grill isn't stock, I got it on eBay. It's just chromed plastic. Not sure the size of the tube in the grill, I'll go measure when I get a chance (I assume you mean length). I also have LED lights that light red along the floor. I've wanted to change the gauges, but I haven't gone that far in. Did you just change lights or did you wire your own?

I made little led and resistor pack things and soldered them where the light holders went for the stock bulbs

That's sweet, good idea! I haven't got to do much of the 'purty' stuff yet, but it's coming. I did just finish building my roof rack, it's being powder coated now, hope to have it on soon.

Hey Chase, how'd you post those pics...?

all those upgrades on lighting and intierior, ya think you could have spent all that hard earned cash on suspension and tires. But I suppose you don't do a whole lot of offroad.

Looks pretty good from what I could see. Your pics are kinda dark. What volume of air do you have? That thing looks huge. I will have about .73cu/ft per chamber for each 10" woofer. DEI has a lot of things on clearance so I bought a set of CompX 10's. I hit 144.4 with the Studio 10's so should hit real hard with these new ones. Anyone wanting a deal on 9month old Studio 10's give me an email.

I had to add stom srcap wood inside to reduce the volume, right now, I have 1.9 cubic feet combined

95,

Yeah the roof rack is custom, I just built it last week. It's up in Coeur d'Alene being powder coated right now, hoping to be able to go get it in the next couple of days. I was looking around the web at all the different racks out there, most were outside my play budget and I didn't like the looks, so I designed and built my own. I used a wire feed welder and 3/4 EMT (electrical metalic tubing-I'm an electrician) To mount it, I built feet that fit the existing roof rails on my XJ, and I built little plastic spacers that fit the feet to prevent scratching.

I wanted to be able to take it off when I didn't need it, but after seeing it sitting on there (even unpainted) the testosterone factor is such that it'll probably just stay on there most of the time. In fact, a few friends have said I should go into building them (in my spare time -HA!) and market them...

I'll get a pic up as soon as I get it back...

FYI - built and installed a 1" transfer case drop over the weekend...

Thats cool, I hope your not going to let us wonder and post some pics...
How exactly did you get your rack to attach directly to the stock rails? I was going to build one but, I'm not sure how to attach it. I was thinking some kind of narrow "C" clamp but, I am afraid of it sliding so I figured I would drill through the rails but, when I take it off I don't want any holes. I'm not sure how to attach it...

I saw a rack a guy had built and was trying to peddle on e-Bay for $400, he had a cheap-ass looking c-clamp deal that fit onto the stock cross bars. I eliminated the stock cross bars all together.

The way I did it, the rack sits right on the slide rails which are mounted to the roof. I went through and checked all of the rubber expanding mounting grommets for strength, then built the feet of the rack to bolt on using the sliders inside the bottom rails. I don't remember off hand the size of the bolts, 6mm maybe, but it bolts through the feet and into those sliders.

I didn't see a good way to use the cross bars, they're curved upward, and I could see myself putting enough backpacking gear on top to tear those cross rails apart...

As soon as they get done powder coating it, I'll get some pics up. He said it'd be done last Friday (tick, tick, tick...) I want to see how it's going to look too! I'd like to use it this coming weekend!

cool, Taking the rail off is probably a better idea, I have lights on my front rail, I would probably have to mount them to the rack itself... What is the weight rating for gear on the top of the jeep cherokee? is there a weight limit? I don't know if I would want to put a lot of weight up there since the front driverside post and part of the roof was cut from a '91 and welded in, since my jeep was rolled when I bought it...

Hi there Idaho, Like your roof rack!! Looks good. This may sound silly but... where did you get your cup holder? I can't stand not having one in my jeep.

Thanks - CntryGirl - Arlington, Washington

PS how much would you charge for one of them racks???

my jeep came with a cup holder, but is ia a stupid looking plastic one that clips to the side of the center console, and the stupid thing falls off.
I know you want to build me one of those cool racks don't you... lol

you can get the cupholders on ebay, junkyard or the dealer, not much $$$. The ones that go on the side stink! I have the one that goes over the e-brake, love it! Idaho..Man..awsome rack ( the one on your jeep..lol) Awsome winter snow, down here in Atlanta we are getting zero cold weather............man I miss the north

Hi guys! I got mine via Quadratec, but I've seen them on e-bay. They run around $15, and they mount up with two screws.

Thanks for the comps on the rack, I've still gotta get some lights mounted up, I welded mounts front and back. I don't see myself going into business welding up racks any time soon, but if you guys would like, I can make some measurements and post them. The whole thing is built out of EMT, even the little upright spacers and the legs. Rather than fight trying to weld around corners, I made most of the joints by flattening one end of the pipe a bit, then it's a simple straight weld. Make darn sure your welder is turned down (heat) or you'll burn right through that thin tube and be patching holes!

As it turns out, it's really strong! I had the whole thing packed this last weekend, filled with backpacks, no probs! I have discovered a lot of new wind noise, perhaps a small drop in mpg. Thinking about taking it off when I don't need it, but it looks so darn cool, I don't want to!!

The snow... well, for the past two weeks we've had 0 deg weather and lots of snow. I had 2 new feet last week. In the last two days though, the temp came up to 40+ and most of that snow you see is gone...bummer.

i've got the same stupid cup holder that falls off, well not anymore. just got my seats re upholstered. i'll post pics tommorrow. yo IDAHO!!! i want a rack, how much? pm me!!! i used to live in mountain home, oh how i miss the sawtooths!!

IdahoJeeper
01-21-2005, 02:53 AM
Ah the Sawtooths! I'm planning some backpacking there this summer!

Ferg, is that your XJ in that pic? Green? Looks like we have twins!

Just completed one more add-on. I installed Gabriel air shocks in the back to help with the loads of camping equipment and boy scouts. I didn't put much air in them, but I do see a marked improvement in the carrying ability. One downer I encountered though, with the shocks mounted by the stock mounts, I only have about 2-3" of down stroke before the shock bottoms out. I really don't think it would be a good idea to extend the upper mount, so I'm going to modify the lower axle mount as seen on the Go-Jeep page (www.go.jeep-xj.info). I should be able to gain about 2" of travel there...

Some measurments on the rack would be sweet ass sweet Idaho. I don't have a welder but I work on Jets and it's amazing what people will do for a case of beer or two. They might even throw in the material if i'm real nice to 'em. How long did it take you to put it all together? You think it could be done with square tubing?

I have been looking into getting a rear window sticker for my XJ but didn't want the standard flag or eagle design like everyone else and thier mother has. I think I have found a viable alternative, check out http://graphics4.racingteam.com/Product-RearWindowDecals_1.htm for the standard window stickers but it is also a place to send in your own design and pictures and they will make it a one way window sticker. Seems unique.

I'll get some measurements up soon. I put the thing together over a couple of nights, working on and off. really, there's not much to it. I'm sure you could make it out of box, I chose EMT so I could put nice round bends on the corners. To get the exact angle and distance for the feet, I took the existing cross bars off the top and laid them across the basket of the rack. Then I just farted around with the feet until they matched the OEM bars. When I stuck it on top of the XJ the first time, it was a perfect fit.

I'll put some assembly pics up too...

Hi there, here's the latest! Hood vents. They came out of a Nissan 280Z. The first time I took it out on the hiway, my operating temp was at least 10 deg lower (by the guage). They don't look bad either, in spite of the crappy indoor picture.

I'll admit, it was a little scary taking a jig saw to my hood...

Hi all,

Installed a 62mm throttle body spacer this weekend. Also, opened up my throttle body to match. Basically, I placed the new gasket on the TB in line with the holes, scribed around the base to show where to grind to and went at it. You can see how at the http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoTBboring.htm site. I've only driven it a little since so it's hard to tell at this time what effect, also, still running stock exhaust so untill it's changed i may not see too much difference. Does seem to rev a little quicker, but that could be in my head...
