LT1 engine question

this guy that lives in my town has a 71 Chevy Nova with an LT1 350 engine in it, the Nova is pretty wrecked but the engine is beautiful, plenty of mods he says it has well over 400 hp, he also says there is only 7,000 miles on it (the rebuild I assume), anyway, my question is, is there any way to tell what year this engine is from cuz the LT1 engine I believe (I could be wrong) came out in 1970 and was still around well into the 1990s, so is there anyway to tell which year it came from, especially with all the mods it has done to it...

Ummm there was an LT1 in the 70's? I thought the only one was the 90's one that appeared in 92-96 Vettes and 93-97 F-bodies. Well look obviously if it's an old engine it's going to be carbeurated. If it's a new one it'll be fuel-injected unless he converted it and it'll probably have the LT1 emblem on it in plastic somewhere on top.

The other thing you could do is run a check on the engine serial number.
That would tell you when the thing came out for sure.

The guy should be able to provide you with information, as that
HAS to stay with the car, no matter what build-ups have been performed. In the owners manual is a good place to start.

I'm pretty sure the LT1 was around in the mid 70's, it wasnt designed for the 90's corvettes and camaros. You should be able to check the VIN though.

VINs won't tell you anything if the engine has been swapped... you need to look for the factory stamping on the block, heads, or intake if they are stock. on a Chevy V8, on the block, i believe the stamping is on a tab at the base of the head (left bank, i think) on the front of the block.... the stamping in the heads are inside the valve cover nestled with the rockers, and the stam on the intake is either at the front by the base of the carb, or behind between the carb and distributor cap depending on when it was cast....

these stampings will tell you the date of the casting, the factory of origin, i think whether it was for a car or truck, and i believe the division of GM that it was for

the lt1 was a 350ci with about 350 hp, they were made from 70 to i think 72, the way to tell the difference between the original lt1 and the lt1 from a newer camaro or firebird is the valve covers. if the bolts are around the edges, it is old style, and if they are in a line across the center of the valve cover, it is new style.

heads can also be swapped...the only way to really tell the difference between the LT1(circa 1970) and the LT-1(circa mid 90's) is the gear driven front mount distributor and waterpump. there will be NO belts driving the waterpump. that is the only way to tell, because there are kits available to make the modern lt-1 carbeurated and conventional distributor...but the waterpump stays...chances are it is an original hi-po 70-71 lt1(with out the hyphen)
