I have just bought a 97 jeep cherokee. I have had it 2 weeks. The other day I had a problem with it ideling high after I touched the gas pedal. It would idle high then slow back down. Then when I would put it into drive or reverse it would spit, stutter then stall. Then when trying to restart it would just turn over and not start until I pressed the gas pedal to the floor. It would then spit and sputter and finally start then as soon as I tried to go again it would do the same thing.
After letting it idle for 20 min. I was then able to put it into drive and go. Then this morning I commuted 30 miles no problem. I just went out to run to the store and it wouldn't start just kept turning over. Finally I was able to start it and it went through the same scenerio again.
Any suggestions????

I would start with a good tune up. Fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, oil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Then see where you are.

I experienced something similar with another vehicle, where it would do exactly what you're describing. It was the cold start switch and/or the throttle position sensor. Purred like a kitten after that.
