need help starting, maybe timing

first off, this is my first post, im still a little confused on how this works but i would love it if someone out there could help me.

i recently bought a 89 camaro rs, 305 tbi. the seller didnt drive it much, it hadn't been started in a while when i went to look at it. suprisingly it started and ran fine. 3 days and about 150 miles later it sputtered and died on the highway. it would turn over but just couldn't stay running.

come to find out the top side of the distributor was rusted (the just under the rotor) and pieces that broke off where jamming it up. anyway, i dropped new distributor in, put on new cap, rotor, wires, and plugs (i was going to do a good tune up anyway).

to me it sounds like it wants to start but only sputters and dies after 2 or 3 seconds.

i've messed w/ the timing every way i know of. almost positive the timings on. getting fuel and great spark.

ive been told there is a "est wire" somewhere that has to be disconnected to get correct timing. but i was given no details on where it is or what it looks like. hopefully i will find a chiltons on it, but i can only find haynes.

i would appreciate any help or resources for this problem.

First..The EST is only disconnected to set the timing with a timing light...like how you disconnect the hose to the vacuum advance on a non computer controlled car.

Are you absolutely sure the distributor was installed correctly and the plug wires are the correct order?
Did you use the old ignition module in the new distributor? If so, replace it with a new AC Delco unit...not a Wells, or GP Sorenson, only use AC Delco modules or you'll be sorry. And don't forget to use ALL of the grease that comes with the module between the module and it's mounting surface.

thanks for the advice, but the new igniton module that came w/ the new dist. was bad, using old one now. thanks
