Ugh, that doesn't sound right

Unless I'm mistaken, anyway....

I just went up to the customs shop here and asked them if they could do a MPFI conversion...they said yes, and asked me what parts I had...I told them I don't know all of them, but the guy I bought it from said it has all the parts needed for the conversion. After that, he was talking about gaskets, fuel rails, fuel regulators, etc. saying I would need them...and that to have the conversion done would take 7-8 hours and cost about $600.

Does this sound right?

He also said to put the 5-speed Si tranny in would be easy and only cost $200-300...that sounds about right to me, but $600 for the MPFI conversion? 7-8 hours?

Hell, no, thats expensive. You will need a new intake manifold gasket, but you shouldn't need a fuel pressure regulator or fuel rail.

I didn't think so...the instructions on Lady's website say it should only take 2 hours, not 7 or 8.

So can someone give me a COMPLETE list of EVERYTHING I need to make this conversion?

well i will start the list and people can add or subtract from it

intake mani
throttle body
all sensors on both
injectors
fuel rail
fpr
i/m gasket
resistor box
pm6, pg7, pm7 or some other obd-0 ecu
si throttle cable

i think thats it but im not lookin at a motor right now so i could be missin some things.

Actually, why not do it yourself. From what I've heard and read, it only takes about 3-4 hours worth of labor if you plan everything out correctly in your head.

I would do that, but I have 0 engine knowledge, and if I fucked up I would be out of a car.

i don't think you can realy mess it up. just start on a saturday so if it takes longer then you exp you have sunday to put it back. if you pay some one you will never know what they did and will never be able to fix it if needed. just keep looking on the sited till you find a step by step.

Here's a write-up I found on a quick Google search:

Another from a reputable source:

Another (supposedly one of the best):

Thanks, that's very helpful.

phew 600 dollars? You could probably get a whole engine swapped for less than that, what a ripoff...good deal on the tranny tho. Guess they figure the mpfi swap takes barely any time, so they think you know absolutely nothing and they try to sell you extra parts which = commission + labor charges in their pockets

Yeah, that's a rip off... and you'll need an Si distributor too.

Oh yeah, and while you're swapping trannies, why not replace the clutch and flywheel as well? I suggest the Exedy Stage 1 clutch/11.9lb. ACT flywheel combo (clutchcityonline.com)

I actually was going to get a light flywheel first, then a clutch a few weeks later.

If you do it yourself, that's cool... but if you're paying someone to do it, then you're just paying twice as much for labor when it can be done at the same time... you may as well get the clutch and flywheel at the same time.

I actually don't have the kind of money to buy a clutch and a flywheel together after all the money I'm about to put into the car just to put it up to specs with an Si.

I'm sure you can find someone who's on the boards who lives somewhat close to you to help you out with mpfi... honestly, bro, you're gonna get ripped off big time if you pay that "custom shop" that much to do it.

Oh, I'm not going to do that. That price is absolutely ridiculous, it should only take 2-3 hours. I'm going to try a different shop around here and see if they can do it.

No I'm not doing it myself, if it weren't for the cutting/splicing/rewiring the ECU I would try it, but I don't want to get into that.

bah, i had no engine knowledge before i started out. i learned as stuff broke, though, so there wasn't a whole lot that could go wrong. the part i was removing was, generally, broken.

just make sure you have an adequate supply of tools. boxed and opened end wrenches, a breaker bar, (i dunno if you need one for THIS application or not) a socket set with at least a 3/8 and a 1/4" drive (i always like having the 1/2" drive available for big stuff) long extentions, short extentions, a large pry-screwdrive... you know, the kind that you'll never in your lifetime find a practical application for as a screwdrive. the kind that's obviously meant to either hit someone with or pry something up with. etc etc etc.

other than that engine work is just a simple matter of 1. not dropping bolts/nuts/screws in the grass and losing them, and 2. remembering where all your parts go as you're putting them back together.

600 daym!!!
i'd do it for 150.00 which includes the wiring....but you're 2000 miles away...lol. If you want...I'll charge you $50 dollars to make the harness for you so that it is plug and play...just ship me out a dx and si harness.
