best sub positioning?

Ive got a Tbird, and my subs are in my trunk. Right now I have a humongous ported box for 2 12's which is too tall to face the subs towards the rear of the car. So the subs are facing up at the rear deck. Ive had a sealed box with 2 subs before, (those subs and box were sold after a very short time though) and I noticed a MAJOR difference from when the subs faced to the front, and when they faced the back. They were at least 3 times louder facing the back. The subs I have now in my gigantic ported box which faces upwards, are meant for a small sealed enclosure. Do you guys think they would hit harder if I made a new sealed box for them which would allow them to face rearwards? And would I want to have one chamber for both, or one chamber for each? The subs are Xplods, one is the xs1235, and one is the xs1236 (exactly the same specs except one is 800W max, and the other is 900).. the red, round ones. I know I need better subs, but thats not the issue, they are good enough for me to worry about other things first. (my mids and highs)

You'll lose output by going to sealed, even if they are facing the rear. You could fit a ported box that's rear facing though, you just need to build it yourself. And definitely do separate chambers, with 2 of the same sub it's alright to do common, but you have different subs.

Alright, i noticed a slight difference in ouput on my subs, nothing huge, but just a bit less than what they use to do. Recently i rewired them, and i do remember stripping off a bit of speaker wire on the ends. At the time i didnt think much of it, but now im thinkin that might be the reason? could that possibly be the problem?

I doubt it. How many watts are you pushing, and.. how much wire did you accidentally strip off? Ive seen subs pound out with 24 guage wire, so Id imagine you would have to run a LOT of watts for it to make much difference.

back to the first topic here... why would the subs be louder facing the back rather than the front. I was planning on having mine facing upwards would that be ok?

Mine face upwards and they hit pretty good, I think its okay that way since it faces up at the rear window and reverberates into the car. About it being louder facing backwards, I dont know why that is, but its true.

it reduces cancellation, you have the wave coming off the cone and the wave reflecting off of the trunk lid in phase with each other, so it eliminates a lot of the cancellation you can get vs a sideways firing or upwards firing setup (the wave coming off the cone, the wave reflecting off the side or roof of the trunk, and the wave reflecting off the trunk lid are all interfering with each other causing cancellation in those orientations)

cool, that answers that. but what about the subs facing rearwards rather than forwards?

It all depends on the car. My setup is firing forward and it's the loudest for my car.

I can't really understand what you're saying....you mean you stripped off some of the insulation? or you cut off the end of the speaker wire? which end? is it still attached to the speaker/amp? how is it attached (ring terminal, screw, clamp, etc)?

There is a reason why woofers are louder facing rearwards. something about Wave building giving the waves room to strech out instead of jsut causing pressure changes. There is a tutorial all about it some where i read not all too long ago. ill see if i can fund it...

It s louder like that in some cars..........and to ur question....prolly not the wiring.

MY fiancee's Maxima sounds best with the subs facing the rear, while my Escort sounds best with them facing forward. My Bronco sounded best facing upwards. It's all the vehicle, experiment and see what works.

the facing of the subs is really a matter of placing the cone in a high presure node ....... so it's not which way it faces. And of course all of the above only applies to trunk mounted subs, the difference in facing or postion in a hatchback is not nearly such a problem.
