Is anyone familiar with the 4wd setup on the Grand Vitara?
If so, could please some one assist me on the "air bag"set-up, in the front diff,
dealer telling me it is that, and chev dealer saying it is the "pump,
anyone who could further help me out, it would be appreciated

Yeah, I did some cself checks, pump is located about centre, just under front bumper, you'll see the air hose go to the differential. I know for a fact now that inside the differential, there is a airbag, that when you shift into 4wd, pump blows up airbag to about 3-5 psi, pushing on axles to lock.
Suzuki will fix for about 3 hrs labour, and about 150.00 for the airbag, but they said they have to replace a couple of bearings als, not sure of that. Thanks for the reply, this may help you out too.

I myself haven't found a solution to this problem (my whole purpose for going online tonight), but I have noticed a disturbing trend. The majority of the posting have been within the last couple of months and have all been 2001 gv. If I find anything useful I'll let you know. Until then, take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. :)

I just now am going thru the same problem, 99 GV is in the shop now.
Every time I put vehicle into 4WD I got scarey Metal on metal banging. Left wheel would not engage into 4WD. After they convinced me I had to let them take out the Dif. they said nothing was wrong mechanically, that they had to put it back together and check the vacume pump and hoses to the Dif. Do not pull the Dif until after they have checked the Vac. pump and lines. If there is metal in the oil, , then tear it down and check the airbag and mechanicals. I just wasted 250.00 bucks plus oil.
